There's a quote about advertising, working jobs we hate and buying things we don't need but it's not that quote as far as I recall.

Either way, that quote was around long before Fight Club.

EDIT: “Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate, so we can buy s**t we don’t need.”
