How to sand a wall tile to remove shine - need to get grip on tile

Hi

Hoping that someone could offer some assistance to the following challenge.

Task:
to Spray paint a mural on a tiled wall in a bathroom. Montana spray paints will be used.

Challenge:
Spray needs a porous or rough surface to stick.
We have tried using a Primer (BIN 123) followed by a mould reactance top layer, which was then spray painted followed by a sealant lacquer allows on top ðŸ˜…
unfortunately this had the risk of chipping away with a hard knock that would chip away the paint down to the original tile.

Possible solution:
One solution we have looked at is to sand the the tile back leaving a rough edge that would the allow for primer-paint-spray paint and lacquer to be applied.

The sanding option has not worked as I think the sandpaper and/ or equipment was not suitable.

The easy answer would be not to do it but I’m hoping someone might have a better answer!!!

Any advice appreciated

You could plaster the tiles with the adhesive first, it can be designed to stickb to existing tiles but not sure how fine a finish you are looking for?
In theory you could then get the adhesive skimmed with plaster.

Though I'm surprised that you couldn't remove the gloss finish from the existing tiles... Are they porcelain?

Alternatively you could try an etching cream to remove the glaze

Thanks for the reply, the builders think the best option is to sand.

The tiles are very basic ceramic tiles (there was no need for an expensive tile as they are being spray painted! 3 images below of the wall and close up of tile!

What 'cream' were you referring to as happy to try anything at this stage!

Paint - 'Perma-White, Interior Paint'

I should add that while the builders think the best option is to 'sand' they don't know what to use!

One option suggested was to use the industrial sander which is used for sanding back floor tiles but this would not suit given the areas to sand and the awkward setting of the room.

if you want to cut through the glaze, you are going to have to use something that is Diamond coated. What, would depend on what tool, or not, you are going to use.

ah, I had assumed these were old tiles...seems they are brand new!
Would you consider covering the tiles with waterproof panels and then applying your paint?

The panels are pretty cheap and easy to dull the finish for better paint adherence.

Yes, new tiles but cheap so all grand.

Thanks for the input. Had considered something smiilar with pannelling over the tiles but with the risk of condensation building up behind the panels we decided against it.

We are expecting delivery of some diamand polishing pads on Monday as suggested by Chief Kaiser above!

The waterproof panels would prevent water vapour from getting to the tiles so you wouldn't have a condensation problem.

Will do, waterproof panels may have been a better option and would most definitely have been a cheaper option to what is happening right now! Oringal job was to take 4 days, we're now into the second wk with at least one more to go and all before the artist does his piece:eek::)

Ziniser bin primer would work, buy definitely run a sander over the tiles first, you only need to lightly key the tiles

I wouldn't use BIN straight on the tile. Its brittle ( essentially nail varnish). As suggested, ESP or oil based primer
