As a teen I'd often listen to the Radio 2FM Hotline but as soon as the theme music of the Dave Fanning Show started @ 8:02pm (News bulletins used be 2 minutes in those days) I was switching to our local pirate radio stations like ERI, South Coast Radio and I think Radio Luxembourg used come on at about 7pm so this was also an option back then and later you had Century Radio (1989-1991) and Atlantic 252 kHZ on Longwave from 1989 for a number of years.

Good. That format is killed Newstalk’s afternoon show. They’ve even brought in a “segment” on their breakfast show.

I am somewhat surprised to hear NewsTalk's afternoon show is negatively impacted although; I am not sure from your post if you are referring to Lunchtime Live 12noon-2:00pm with Ciara Kelly, Moncrieff 2:00-4:00pm with Sean Moncrieff or The Hard Shoulder 4:00pm-7:00pm with Ivan Yates?

I know Moncrieff's audience ratings had shown strong solid performances in that segment (up against Liveline for first 60 minutes) for a number of years unless it's now in decline in most recent JNLR results?

This is disappointing, the one show I listened to on 2FM as well. I don't really get to listen to much radio in the middle of the day unless I'm driving at that time. His listener-ship figures will surely suffer.

Lunchtime Live with Dr. Ciara Kelly. It’s just awful. Unless she has a “guest” on.

I just turn off these days. Which is a shame because I think she’s a good host. Just can’t stand having to put up with eejits and cranks giving their, worthless, opinions on whatever topic it is today.

Friday is the worst, as it’s a “free for all”. No set topic so you really get the full spectrum of stupidity that out there.

The guys in Breakfast Show take calls from “plebs” around 9:45am now too. A truly terrible decision.

I preferred the earlier lunchtime shows broadcast on NewsTalk 106-108. Ciara is intelligent and well capable but I find it has gone almost too politically correct especially since George Hook made those highly controversial remarks on his former High Noon programme! I did not mind Ciara when she was a guest contributor along with Shane Coleman & Dave McIntyre each Friday on the former show The Right Hook with George Hook 4:30-7:00pm weekday slot. Ciara used also have her Health Check advice slot which was excellent but I'm not a huge fan of the current show format.

Ah that's good to hear.

Gareth's old show on RTÉ Radio 2FM probably came on air straight after Larry Gogan's show back in the day. It used give us a boost at work if you were tired in the afternoon at 3pm and it got you through.

I recall before Gareth's current serious health condition he shared some insights into the topic of depression and I think he wrote a book(s) on the topic.

Gareth was also one of those presenters who used fill for Gay Byrne every Monday & Tuesday over a prolonged period as Gay was approaching retirement from his RTÉ Radio 1 daily show. Gay would only present on Wednesday/Thursday/Fridays at that stage. Joe Duffy also did similar relief stint before he went on to succeed Marian Finucane on LiveLine.

Des Cahill had a short-lived and mostly forgotten stint in that slot too.

Joe Duffy was pretty much unceremoniously dumped from the slot and only got the Liveline gig by good fortune really. He would have occasionally sat in for MF, Damien O'Reilly style.

He had been advised by Gaybo to keep turning up for work in RTE even though he didn't really have anything to do!!

Yeah, Gareth has a very active FB page, he posts regularly and has posted up some very thoughtful well written tributes to the recently departed legends. He still seems to be in fairly good shape thankfully.

This radio studio has seen some great shows in its day over the golden years, but tonight it lies silent.

The chair is empty and the room is bathed in a gentle light that reflects and reminisces on memories, old stories, and great songs that the individuals who once sat in this chair played - simply because they were such a poignant part of a great period in this life, a soundtrack for our journey. If only those walls could talk.

It's been a very difficult week for anyone who loves listening to radio. Whether you were in the car, or the van or the lorry, or in the place where you worked, radio was the time you set your day by. Sadly too many of the true legends are hanging up their headphones forever.

For those of us who sat in this studio, it was a joy to be a part of that day. I look at the desk and recall hundreds of fantastic memories, and I feel very priviledged and very lucky to have been a part of it all.

Sadly another great name on that team passed away earlier today. He was, of course, the greatest member on the team for decades. His name was Larry Gogan.

It's been a difficult few months, if only because our legends are being taken away from us too soon and too quickly.

The most loved friends who saw us through the toughest of times: Gay Byrne, Marian Finucane, and now Larry Gogan; their beautiful voices and their endearing unique styles and comforting words never to be heard again. It's heartbreaking, and very hard to take in. They're gone forever.

This very private studio that gave way publicly every day to some of the most uplifting radio, some of the boldest moments, the liveliest of debates, and the finest music you were likely to hear - this beautiful studio retains all of that energy. But tonight it remains silent.

Larry Gogan was brilliant on so many levels. He was an enigma. He reinvented himself over and over, and by doing so he opened the door to careers in radio for hundreds of talented people who grew up listening to him.

His ratings were always the best because his endurance never tired. That was because he loved what he did. Every radio show was like his first. Very few of us can carry that one off successfully over and over again.

His testimony was that, while on air for well over 40 years, he outgrew and outlived most of his former bosses, and thankfully he never aged. That's as good as outliving your own doctor.

His mostly youthful 81 years spent doing what he lived for every day proved to each of us that if you love what you do, then the idea of permanent retirement is nonsense.

Keep going for as long as the listeners want to keep listening to you - and not the bosses who know very little if anything about the magic of an amazing voice and great music, and a unique and lasting charisma, which will always be part of what it takes to draw in and retain a huge, loyal audience. Larry was the real talent. Many of the bosses were just a pain in the arse.

I spoke to Larry for the first time in 1975 when I was 14. I rang RTE and told a woman who answered my call that I wanted to be a DJ. Little did I know that she would put me through to a decent, patient man who spent over half an hour on the phone telling some random teenager how to go about fulfilling his dreams.

Fourteen years later in 1989, when I joined 2FM which had just been relaunched, I shook his hand for the first time. It dawned on me that he remembered me from that phonecall all those years before when he said to me, "It might have taken you a while, but you finally got here. Now enjoy every minute." He remembered me.

Larry Gogan was both a joy and a gentleman: a great friend that I will always cherish. Great talent, great advice, and the best of company.

I just know that Florrie, his beautiful wife and soulmate and the love of his life, is there tonight waiting to hug him and welcome him home. He spent a long time missing her, but now they are reunited forever in the most romantic final slow-set of the evening.

My best wishes in the days ahead to Gráinne, Orla, Sinéad, David and Gerard.

Larry Gogan...a classic everytime. Rest easy, Larry. And thank you for all those great shows.

RTE always dump their talent for no hopers. Never heard of this woman,but it sounds like more misery porn.

She had a good new music show a few years ago in the evening and knows her stuff musically. Didn’t hear her talk show on Saturday but going by her stand ins for Dave, more of a cup of tea for younger audience. Hopefully not too vacuous and love island-sequel.

Anyone hear Dave’s show at the weekend then?

You’re making that statement based on listening to her show from a few years ago which I mentioned? It was up and coming music which was known to introduce people to new music.

What argument are you trying to compare her to Annie Mac, who has been allowed to present a wide range of music to millions on bbc? That’s just no allowed any more on Irish radio, it doesn’t make money.

You could also make the same argument for Paul mcloone, Zane Lowe, Donal dineen etc etc. all experienced Dj’s with knowledge in different genres.

2FM is supported by the licence fee, it is very well funding and hasn't seen any major cut in funding over the last number of years. Put hey go ahead and put 3 presenters on a daily 2 hour Sports talk show, because some how that will make them money.
