Dave Allen, the greatest raconteur of them all.

Dylan Moran is missing from your list.

I fell asleep the other night watching a youtube vid and woke up to a Dave Allen one playing. He was funny I must admit.

    Left out Spike Milligan.

    Mea MAXIMA Culpa :eek::eek:

Mind you, just browsing through the replies here and some of the recommendations are of people I would definitely have on my "Not funny at all, ever" list.

    David O'Doherty?? Seriously?

And Deirdre O'Kane? I'd rather listen to a dentist's drill.

    Such a subjective topic.

Probably not the funniest ever, but saw David O’Doherty perform twice last year. An exceptionally funny man.

No Facebook Comedians? Sorry, "comedians". Suregawdluvus.

I like Foil, Arms and Hogg I have to say but they're in a different category of sketch comedy IMHO.
They are very very good though.

This is about comedians you find funny, dude. Not the someone you don’t like thread.

He used to be funny, no doubt about that. But that was a long, long time ago.

He takes himself very seriously now and has a massive opinion of his own depth of intelligence which is actually very shallow.

I, personally, think he’s come out the far side of taking himself too seriously. He seemed to get a bit self conscious about people thinking he’s a clown so he got very “artiste” about his craft.

Happens to a lot of comedians. Blindboy Boatclub, from The Rubberbanits, is another example of someone who doesn’t want to seen like the “character” he used to portray so goes to great lengths to show that he is, somewhat, intelligent.

Tiernan seems to be up for just having a laugh and being a bit “funny” again. Of course, he adjusts to whatever the situation requires in his, current, tv show.

Ah come on. Leave out the Plastic Paddies or we'll be here all day. Sure may as well stick in Conan O'Brien or Stephen Colbert or Katherine Ryan while you are it.

If we're playing that game, I'm drafting Jimmy Carr since he already has the passport and both his parents are from Limerick!

Dermot Morgan's stand up was poor and his acting was ropey. First few episodes of fr Ted, he just about kept you in it. He did improve as it went on. The writing was the star, really.

Dave Allen was a class act. His skit on starting school in rathfarmham is a favourite.

I’d have to disagree. I think Morgan had the toughest role in Ted. The others were more broadly comedic caricatures but Morgan’s role was more complex, having to be both a straight man to the others and a complete fool in his own right. I think he did a great job.

O’Doherty is fantastic. Saw him just before Christmas, great stuff. The last ten minutes of the show was spent in just constant laughter. A very down-to-earth guy too.

If its Spike he's on about, he was actually born in India as his father was stationed there. I think that's why he was turned down for his UK passport and ended up in Australia.
All the Q series were excellent.

Sorry, just realised I mixed my quotes up. ... but that Jimmy Carr I just can't see what the attraction is I don't find him funny at all?

I find them so pedestrian. I read an interview with them where they said they were in talks about getting a TV show but they were told that sketch comedy is currently out of fashion. Maybe that’s true but I couldn’t help thinking that it was just that they weren’t considered good enough.

I saw them over the summer as a friend wanted to go. It was pretty gentle comedy and a lot of stereotypical Irish stuff that in reality many people don’t identify with. If you’re going to go down the ‘LOL, the Irish love Buckfast’ route or whatever, you need to find a way to put a spin on it. But there was no envelope-pushing, just “LOL, the Irish love drinking and Buckfast!”.

The genius of Father Ted was that despite the slapstick stuff, a lot of the observations about the Irish were keenly observed and felt anything but stereotypical. Very subtle stuff, a lot of it.

Not a stand up comedian as such but I'd rate Paul Howard as the funniest man in Ireland. And he's been consistently funny for 20 years.

    Dylan Moran, without a doubt.

I'm not a big fan of his stand-up but I thought this scene in The Actors is one of the funniest things on film.

How many films have you watched?

No matter how many it is, you badly need to watch more films.

I used to be a big fan of his. I don't watch his TV show but I have seen him live on stage twice in the last 12 months, he's brutal.

I paid to see him the first time and after a short while realised he was locked drunk. He couldn't even remember what he was talking about half way through some of the jokes. It was actually painful to witness someone I had previously admired so much fall so far. If I met him in the pub afterwards I would have demanded my money back.

The last time I saw him was at the same venue, there was no entrance fee and it was still painful to watch and listen to him. He peaked an awful long time ago and is on a steady decline since.

Too subjective to say. I think Dave Allen had the best material and delivery of all time. He could say more with a facial expression than most comedians can with a whole paragraph. But his best work is pre-prepared and rehearsed. Not so much "in the moment".

I see Dara O'Briain is doing well in the poll above. I do not think his material is as good. But his quick off the cuff wit is definitely second to none. I have seen few people who can be funny "in the moment" like he can. His pre-prepared stuff live is almost never as good as what he just does when he is riffing.

If somehow you could combine those two - you would have a god of comedy I think.

Is Chris O’Dowd a comedian? Would he not be considered an actor?

Really enjoyed him in that ‘Get Shorty’ show.
