Upgrade CPU/MB

Time to move with the times

My old ASRock Z68 Pro3 has been with me since Jan 12
Currently have a 3TB HDD, 2x256GB SSD, GTX 1080, and an i7-3770 running on it.

To begin to do any future upgrades I (thinking) that my first port of call is a new MB, and may as well do the CPU

Budget of €400 (all in) would be about it, for the moment, maybe 500 for a great deal.
Been pushed by my wife as she wants to buy the MB as a Christmas present but wants to know which one to buy.

I've not kept up at all on the options available.

You'll need to upgrade the RAM to DDR4 too.

    Looking at overclockers.co.uk only:

    Total: £414.53 (includes shipping: £10.76)

2700 for less than €165 with a copy of Borderlands 3 and Game Pass seems a decent deal.

Ohh that 2700 is a pretty tasty deal.

This is the best video i've seen for a real world comparison of 2nd gen ryzen vs 3rd gen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIVqIAv11Gg

I would get the 3600. I know the 2700 has more cores/threads going on but the 3600 beats it in games, sometimes by a decent amount. At worst, it's respectably faster, at best, it's a good lot faster depending on the game. I think I would go for what was posted in the first reply, the 3600x bundle, though the regular 3600 is fine too and can be a lot cheaper.

I agree regarding a 3000 series CPU. Single threaded was also improved upon. AMD keep improving each year. Who knows what next year will be like.

OK it begins, picked up the 3600, B450, and some 3200 DDR4

Now I'm looking at cases. Keep the Blu Ray drive or not is the question. What's the airflow hit of not pulling air through front mesh, if I were to keep a drive bay?

Around the €75 mqrk is there an6 standout case either way. Quiet with dust filters a must

    Fractal Design Focus G.

Alternatively, get a Corsair 270R/275R & an external DVD reader.

The external won't cut. I use the PC as my media machine also, having an embarrassingly large BluRay collection (as well as several old DVD based games, which I know I know ISO but I like the discs). Want to keep clutter to a minimum, or else I would have a dedicated BluRay player.

This will be the last of the optical drive days.

That Fractal looks nice and way under budget

Just looking at a nice minimalist look, with no RGB to turn off

Got any experience with corsair low level cases?

    Seems ok but not spectacular.

Maybe Silverstone PS11B-Q instead (review / Amazon)

Or spend a few more on quality and get a be quiet Pure Base 600.

Just picked up the Fractal. It is damn quiet, massive step up from my last budget case (from 7 years ago!!)

Supplier sent out the CPU mounted on the board but never benched it. B450 was on old gen BIOS and did not read the newer 3600.
Ended up having to find an old 8GB USB Drive, unseat the CPU, and flash the BIOS. At least the B450 has a BIOS flash onboard ability, without having to source an older Ryzen chip.
