That's because they are German company's. They get more days off in Germany than we do. 30 days is around the normal annual leave for the year.
It should be the same here.

My nearest tesco and dunnes are also closed tomorrow.
Supermacs will be open, and packed!

Oh and let people do what they want. There are tons of threads in here about how much some people hate Christmas and ‘forced fun’. Pubs and other venues will be packed on Stephens Day too. It’s not for me but if someone enjoys shopping on Stephens day then good luck to them

True, but for them to shop, there are staff being made to leave their families and go to work, and its probably the last place they want to be.

I really can't see the harm in retailers like Next or Harvey Norman staying closed for the 26th, and letting their staff have a proper christmas, without having to get up at 2am (or not go to bed) so they can show up at work on the 26th to serve others.

In this day and age, sales should be setup online, let people shop from their couch rather than the current madness where people queue up, staff have ridiculous early starts and treads like get started.

Agreed. And click and collect on the next working day - not the 26th!

Consumerism has done more for us than all those
wacky made up religions. It’s great, and nobody is forced to take part.

It would be if manufacturers actually made stuff that didn't have an expiry date. Everything will be landfill far sooner than you expect.
everyone is being conned by planned obsolescence.

Who the fcuk is up for a sale at 6am the day after Christmas.

I really pity the workers who has weeks of Christmas shyte, one day off and back in for the sales. It's all about money and it's sad and depressing.

Mostly Christian's celebrate Christmas. It's just another day for alot of people only paid more .

Retail isn’t necessary for a couple of days.

Is posting on an Internet forum necessary for a few days? Why is Internet posting necessary and shopping for "bargains" not?

I wouldn't mind the Stephen's Day sales if there was something decent to be got. But 90% of what's on sale is just the old bits of sh*te they couldn't sell throughout the year dressed up as some kind of 'bargain'.

Is someone working today because I’m perusing an Internet forum?
Certainly, no one has to read or reply to my posts. Or provide me with any sort of customer service.

It's not that many years since shops closed on the 25th and 26th.I remember it and I am not that old!!It was a UK tradition for a long time before that.

They’re getting paid to do their jobs, strike up the violins.

That’s some comparison you’ve made there though, rotten.

Balls to that, I have to be up at 6am for scuba diving. Should be a nice sunrise, though.

People saying "maybe people want to work that day for the increased pay". It's not increased pay, its the same ****ty wage you normally get plus the money you are entitled to anyway for the public holiday.

If you work 8 hours, you'll be paid for 8 hours and get your 8 hours holidays that you were getting already. Its always advertised as double pay. If you work the day, the holiday hours are gone.

I was meant to work 4 hours on Stephens Day. I would have got the 4 hours I worked plus the 4 hours holiday. I worked those 4 hours the other day, I'll get my 4 hours and my 4 hours holiday pay anyway. Its basically regular pay overtime.

This sounds sad but am getting up now to get some stuff in the sales. Hitting H&M first then maybe Next. Hopefully get a few bargains

Which means the workers have to be in 2 or 3 in the morning. Disgraceful.

Love Aldi and Lidl for actually closing for 2 whole days and giving their workers a little bit of time off.

Jeez, quite a sad statement for society that the likes of Aldi and Lidl are setting a reasonable standard for workers' rights. I'd wonder if it's because they are German owned, Germany is not quite as consumerist as Anglo countries like the US, UK, Ireland.

Sales time or not Next is the most depressing place I've worked in.

In the lead up to sales you usually do a night shift, which consists of tagging all the crap they didn't sell during the year from midnight to 8 am in the warehouse .
The managers in general there are nazi - like and indoctrinated and expect you to cross sell and sign people up for loyalty cards non stop.

Wouldn't set a foot in one of their "sales".

It is sad in my opinion. Each to their own I guess!
