first electric vehicle in series production that supports Plug&Charge.

So it not compatible with existing cars?! Can't see that being used much in the short term. This needs to happen but if additional hardware needs to be installed in cars it won't be an option for many.

When you see the term Plug and Charge, like the Ionity tweet, it usually refers to the ISO15118 implementation. The standard was updated in April this year, we're now starting to get the first implementations.
    Very interesting.
I presumed it was the existing CCS protocol that shared info already

Agree with the above replies too, it reads like this will not work for existing cars.

Use QR codes in the meantime. Easy to do. This ISO isn't implemented...

People have reported issues scanning the qr codes at night as the areas of some chargers are not lit. Also the app often does not work or the charging does attempt to start but then fails. Not easy to do in my book.

It's not as easy as plug and charge
The difference is more pronounced when compared with Tesla charging.

My first attempt took 8 attempts because the guidelines on the charger are wrong.

Yes, there are QR codes on each charger.
The issue is the instructions are wrong.

Used Ionity for the first time in Circle K Athlone. Scanned the QR code and it worked fine for me, although once I scanned it I just followed what was on the site rather than looking at instructions on the charger itself.

See, the issue is, if you follow the instructions on the charger it will never work!

You need to pay, then connect to the car. It will not work if you do it the other way round. And the charger screen tells you to do it the other way!

Any word on when Kill will be operational? Also, it's two separate sites, one northbound and one southbound, isn't it?

2 separate sites , yes, one North and one South
No word on opening times, I drove past it a couple of weeks ago and it was nowhere near ready

Smart doesn’t have CCS so I’m wondering that myself

Just a quick update: Ionity units at Circle K M6 in Athlone are still *all* out of order. The app authorised the credit card for EUR 8 but fails to activate and returns an error. Plugsurfing key fob is no longer accepted there—message shows “You are not authorised”. I have called them and they are aware of the issue and there is no timeline for a fix. I have tested stall 1 and 3, as 2 has already been reported, and someone else tried stall 4.

Lots of complaints in Europe too

How are fast chargers so unreliable?

Seem to break multiple times a year

From all I've heard in the last while, CCS seems to be less reliable than the "obsolete" CHAdeMO.

I strongly believe that the Ionity issue has nothing to do with it being CCS. The issue is with the payment and authorisation logic of their software, not to mention the poor web site and an equally poor app. I would venture a guess that authentication and identity federation (for Plugsurfing users etc) has not been implemented in a robust enough manner. In other words: hardware, including the CCS connector and its firmware, are just fine. It is all the other crap they added on that is poorly coded and broken.

I wish all EV chargers just did two simple things: 1. Accept card payments. 2. Offer free vend if comms etc go out of whack.

I definitely agree that Ionity are having issues outside of CCS standard. Even beyond this CCS seems less reliable, it is likely due to more open interpretations of the standard compared to the more ridgid ChaDeMo.

    It's explained well here: https://www.speakev.com/threads/how-reliable-is-ccs.143494/#post-2709436

I thought you were in Europe ... :D

No complaints here with CCS, as long as you have an App or Card, one or the other will work.

Is there a way to see if Ionity is up and running?

The Ionity app shows that, but you cannot rely on it. We drove to the M6 Athlone ones, showing as up and running, but they were all out of service. I reported that to their help desk, asking that they display up to date status. I was told that my message will be passed on to someone somewhere. :/

    UK based thread
Ecotricity have a long running issue with CCS

"So to answer the thread title - CCS is noticeably less reliable on Ecotricity, but I haven't noticed any difference between Chademo and CCS on other networks."

Agree with this... Ecotricity can't seem to keep the CCS going. Polar, Shell, Instavolt etc have no such problems.

Hello to the white Tesla model 3 performance that also struggled at Ionity Athlone today.
    Farce of a system.
Tried to pay first on app and on website but charger wouldnt initiate.
Tried paying with credit card and paypal.
Rang the helpdesk, after numerous attempts and changing to a new bay it didnt work.
Said she was escalating to Level 2 helpdesk and would be sorted in 5 minutes.
Used the Circle K facilities and got a coffee as its baltic and wet to be standing at a charger today.
Rang helpdesk again after 10 minutes, same issue. Told them it was a disgrace and I would never use their system again.
Both of us had to leave with no charge.
I would avoid at all costs.
P.S. 4 paypal €8 transactions and some on my credit card also which I was told would be reimbursed for.

Jesus that’s total crap. Sounds like a right PITA. Just to contrast, I’ve used the e-cars RDC units a couple of times since fees were introduced and from my experience it’s been very straightforward in comparison to your issues with Ionity. From what I’ve read, I’m not looking forward to when I need to use Ionity

The Irish public charging system is simply not fit for purpose it’s a complete mess.

    Rubbish.

There are many happy EV owners here who, combined, have driven hundreds of thousands of kilometers without much issue. Much even pre Ionity & ECars charging - the network has vastly improved since & will improve further.

Back to an ICE with you .

    Its not just ireland

Ionity is a shambles in many European countries too, loads of complaints everywhere

Tesla need to finish its network here, owners deserve it
