The smart way to handle these situations is to try to clean up the mess as much as you can.

Try to keep your job, do everything right for a month or two, and then resign on good terms.

Ireland is small, best to not burn bridges.

I understand the above goes against whatever voice is screaming inside you when you're in this situation.

Her time is obviously up or very close to being up. Best would be to either find a new career or return to education. A crap job with with no prospects is a great tool to focus the mind for what you really want to do.

    Update:

Not fired! Final written warning and back to work straight away this morning. They said coming in and being straight up about it was really in my favour. Based on previous stats and general work ethic,

Very lucky as most were fired in this situation. Glad I copped on and went in, thanks for all the advice boardsies!!

Good for you, you kept a cool head.

Maybe look at your life after settling back in to see what changes you need to make i.e new job etc.

Great stuff, just after reading the thread through
Coming from one a bit older than you (can't believe I'm saying that!) you've shown maturity in the way you reacted to the issue. I do think this will stand to you.

Advice: When the dust settles, move to a different job. Maybe in Q1.

It is worth noting now that with a final written warning you are now the bad boy/girl of the office.

You will need to change your attire - leather jacket, sleeveless white T, stone washed jeans and a pair of obxoxious trainers should do the trick.

The hair (as it shall now be known) will also need to be over styled at all times, to the point where it always looks wet.

Generally you will respond negatively to any request, show up late, eat large messy meat stuffed sandwiches at your desk (which is now whatever desk is closest when you feel like sitting down).

You may notice a significant increase in attraction from members of the opposite sex, this should be encouraged but not too much as it's besk not to **** on your own doorstep.

Physical violence is best avoided, however a menacing atmosphere of fear and intimidation will serve you well come review time.

    Good luck with it all.

I know we didn't see eye to eye throughout this thread- I didn't mean to get ratty with you - communication can be difficult sometimes on boards- I wanted you to care about your future not just this job but how you left the job and with what support from your current company as that is important- however, my case was always to face the music and put your case across- and you did that.

Can I just say that I'm proud of you. Well done and best wishes.

It really shows the value of facing up to your responsibilities OP instead of the cowardly way if hiding out and just never turning up again.

Sometimes facing the music is the best option.

I still think OP you need to look to your own future. Call centre work is one of those jobs that people get caught in as it can be "okish" money but then you blink and 10 years later you havent progressed and cant afford to change as your responsibilities dont allow you.

Now might really be the time to take a step back to take a step forward. You now dont need to make any urgent decisions thankfully and can view it without any immediate pressure.

    Good Luck.

Thanks everyone. The employer took the same stance and said I seem to be at a bit of a crossroad and it's my decision going forward. They said I'm welcome to stay as long as I like and they will give me a good reference and help me move forward.

    Very nice of them

Well done OP - glad to see this outcome for you.

When the dust settles, I'd start thinking about doing some courses/upskilling and moving on.

Not sure if you deliver technical support but, if so, you could use this as a platform for a move into a more traditional IT support role.

Take care and all the best with your future.
