Not just that, but Smalling knew he'd be a starter for other teams on a similar level for us. He wasn't happy being a bench player.

Jones, on the other hand, is very happy to be 4th or 5th choice.

Where's Tunzabe been? Not seen him for a bit and thought he'd be well above Jones in the pecking order now.

He's been out injured. Got injured in warm up against Liverpool.

See it's stuff like this too. You assume you know what Jones wants and that he's happy with how he's played. This is despite the thing in this thread about the player himself not wanting a testimonial because only his parents would show up. Smalling leaves in the last few days of the transfer window and suddenly he was pushing for a starting spot elsewhere. 4th choice CB being Jones gives United the best 4th choice in the league.

I still maintain the best I've seen United defend since Fergie left was in José's first season when Jones and Bailly got a run of games together. Southgate seemed to agree that he was better too. Jones just seems to be an easy target but purely in terms of his on the ball assertiveness you can tell that he is a better footballer than Smalling quite easily. People almost masochistic at the moment willing him to make a mistake.

Sack Ole, sell Jones, win the league next season though of course. Maybe the toxic nature of the fanbase is having an effect on player's confidence and is too far gone now to change.

If anything I`d say the fan base has been too passive and not toxic at all.

Its shameful whats happening to the club.

I dont think any of the regulars here enjoy moaning but youve got to call it as you see it. Utd have sleep walked themselves in to this position over the last 7 years. Im actually surprised how passive the locals have been seeing the way their club has been treated.

Pure hyperbole. No one has said or intimated that whatsoever. Thats doesnt mean both shouldnt happen, they should.

Should be Tuanzebe if he starts.

Lingard should be nowhere near captaining a Man United side in Europe.

Jones has been at United for 9 years, and in that time, he's rarely if ever been a first team player. Typically, he's sat at 3rd or 4th center back.

If he genuinely had an issue with that, he'd have looked to move on, especially in more recent times. Exactly as Smalling has done (who left the very second he realized he was not a nailed on starter), he'd have valued himself above the squad position he's got at United and looked elsewhere.

He'd have to take a big step down in terms of club and wage, obviously. And I'm not criticizing him for making the decision, because every club needs squad players like him. But if he truely wasn't happy with how he has developed at United, he'd have moved on.

I think we can all agree with absolute certainty that there are no players in that squad who got contract extensions or are still at the club because its cheaper then replacing them and because we have a terrible record of offloading players the last 7 years . . The problem was the experienced, successful managers we hired and we need to get behind Ole cause he is a club legend, hes nice in interviews and we just cant keep sacking managers. .

Oh and we have a recruitment department that does stuff so theres that aswell . .

The real head scratcher is loaning out Smalling yet keeping and playing Phil Jones... that I can’t get my head around.

Smalling and Maguire might be a pretty dynamic dynamite partnership.... Smalling will be and evidently IS learning a heap playing in the Italian Siere A....should improve him no end.

Keep playing Phil Jones? He's been used as a last resort. Jones has only been started in the league once, with a total of four appearances all season, two Europa and one league cup. He's been piratically relegated to the bench and minor competitions.

Plus I doubt we had many offers for Phil.

Smalling is apparently doing well at Roma, this should not take away from how poor he was at times at Utd. His positioning was all over the place and distribution was shocking at times. I'm pleased he's doing well at Roma but Utd should be looking at a huge upgrade on him. Just because he's less awful than Jones doesn't mean he's the answer.

I wouldn't be opposed to giving Smalling a second chance after his Roma loan if he wants it. A confidence boost may help improve his game and he might play well alongside Maguire but its no great loss either.

I’m not sure whether smalling or Jones are any better then each other but Is there any player in that squad around for more then a year who hasn’t been very poor at times? I Think that all managers and players who come to the club have struggled. Other then Maybe Zlatan , who has come and gone from United with even just their reputation in tact? United has been a graveyard for the career of any football person Who has joined them since Woody took charge of things..

Surprised at the odds, Astana must be really bad if United are evens, away from home with what is effectively a youth squad. Especially when a more senior squad only scraped a 1-0 at home .

Very interested to see how the young players get on.

I didn't use the word sold, I said clear out. Smalling and Sanchez will be offered to the clubs come end of season, thinking otherwise is just begrudging. You don't loan out senior players you think have a future in the team.

Do you think Milan will pay Sanchez wages, do you think Roma will pay Smallings wages both of them will be back at the club next season

Instead we are just loaning them out and paying the wages for other clubs to make use of them

If Smalling was playing last Sunday he wouldn't have been on his arse like Jones for that goal

Who could have seen with Baily, Jones and Rojo it would have made sense to keep Smalling who is the only one of them who can keep fit

Another masterstroke for the alleged mass clear out where the majority of those going who went were important squad players the last few years

I've been to games where the performance on the field has been shocking but to their credit, the fans in the stadium always support the team.
Those at the top are a different matter.
The rot started under Ferguson, just shows how much of a genius he was to win a final league with that team.

Both teams have nothing to play for and they can't score and a plastic pitch

Under 2.5 seems a great bet

There's been near constant rumours that Roma want to make the Smalling deal permanent, but don't want to pay the £20m Utd are asking.

Lingard should be nowhere near captaining a Man United side in Europe.

Guy has the maturity of an 11 year old and he's allowed to be captain because "Ah sure, why not, nice lad".

Same kind of "don't give a shít" thinking has allowed Phil Jones to pollute United for close to a decade now.

Club is rotten to its core.

Or, and not defending it, he has been named captain cause the most senior player (by tenure) is generally the captain of United these days - the reason Young is currently the captain, for example.

    Anywho.... team named.

Meh, imo. Too many kids, not a real chance of seeing how they would do in the United first team, so not all that excited about watching it (on my phone... in work...). Hopefully Gomes puts in a good performance, but it won't amount to much even if he does.

Not expecting much more than our performance against them at OT. And that's saying something.

Just has the feel of one of those ****ty pre-season friendlies being played at a weird hour with a few kids you know you'll never see again that are only getting a game because they don't want to work the bigger players too much.

Astana are absolutely awful, AZ scored 11 against them in two games, we should be winning this easily.

Ah crap, I bet on 0-0, no goals at HT and United not to win . . Needless to say, I am not overly confident of this game . .

Has been near constant rumours of United signing players for years

Smalling is earning what is rumored 70 or 80k a week which would make him Roma's third highest earner has he been that good for them?

-13 in Kazakhstan. Ouch. I hope the astroturf is heated.

Some good points made on BT, most of these kids play together in the youths o they will be excited and the stadium has sold out, 300,000 people. So they Utd lure still strong and a good experience for the kids. It'll be interesting to see how Chong and Greenwood do here, plus Lingard in the number 10 role.
