Can anyone recommend a laptop, I'll be mainly using it for programming. But would like a bit of light gaming (doesn't have to be anything recent). Budget of around €600-700. Would prefer a screen of 15".

Lenovo S340 in Argos for 429 seems to be the best deal atm at that price. I'm waiting until Friday to see what is on Komplett.ie before deciding what to get.

Atm i'm going between the lenovo S340, Acer Aspire 5 in Currys for 469 & Asus vivobook in Argos for 485. All have the same processor & ram.
I picked up the Lenovo S340 yesterday. I haven't turned it on yet but the one thing I noticed is the weight. So perhaps check that out before you buy. Argos should be able to open a box for you.

    Hi
I like the look of the telcast x4.
Bang good are selling it at a good price, I assume I’ll get hit with duty, any ideas how much?
They also say they will refund import duties, this sounds too good to be true.
Finally, had anyone ordered from them? Priority delivery is 7-15?business days.

    Thanks

Can someone recommend a decent laptop I can buy my boyfriend for Christmas, it needs to be able to run Ableton/Photoshop etc somewhat seamlessly.

Would I get something like it for around €400?

You'll want to check the screen on any laptop for him.
If he's working in photoshop he'll appreciate the the colour accuracy of an IPS screen.

The Acer Aspire 5 is IPS, the Lenova S340 is not

I’m looking to buy a laptop for college. Well, predominantly college but itl be used for things like Netflix as well. It’d need to be able to handle having multiple things open and running simultaneously, as I’m a bugger for multitasking and hopping from one app to another.

I’m looking for something that’ll last me through the next five years of college ideally, but I know next to nothing about laptops. I’m also worried about buying too cheap and regretting it or buying something overpriced that’s not needed.
I’ve a budget of €600 max but I’ve been looking at the Zenbook after reading through the recommendations....

    https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ASUS-ZenBook-14-UM433DA/

Is it too much for college work? Or would I be better investing in a good one now rather than regret buying a dud.

What did you notice about the weight? Spec says it is just 1.55kg. Is that right?
    Thanks.

Ideal imo as the metal chassis is sturdier than plastic

And with college likely to be carrying it around a lot so the lightness is ideal.

    And it looks good

I have an ASUS UX305F (boards bargain) which weighs 1.2kg so I suppose I was comparing it to that.

I bought the Asus Zenbook from Currys and it was delivered yesterday. I only had it on for a little while yesterday, but first impressions for anybody who is thinking of buying it:
    - Build quality is absolutely top drawer. I knew it would be good, but was surprised by how good it is
    - Lovely screen
    - Speakers are pretty decent for laptop speakers, but tinny when turned up load
    - Keyboard is lovely to type on
    - Being able to use the trackpad as a numeric pad is really handy. If you press the top right corner of the trackpad, it lights up a display to show the numeric pad
    - The backlight didn't work on the keyboard initially, but as Windows was cycling threw downloading and installing updates, one of them must have been the drivers for it, as it began working after a restart
    - I can't comment on performance yet as I only had it on for a short time and it was installing so many updates that it was running a bit slow. Once I have all updates installed over the next few days, I will get more of an idea of it
    - Overall, very happy so far

Would you recommend it? I’ve had a look around and it seems to be the best mid range one when it comes to getting your bang for buck.

tbh the littlewoods one with the more powerful graphics card for 999 posted in the OP post is better. the 1660ti is a good step up from the 1650 card.

games will run better as the gpu is the limiting factor more so than the gpu for this level of cpu + gpu combinations. although it does have a bigger ssd drive but the littlewoods one does have a boot ssd and a hdd so enough space for games.

also a spanish keyboard layout would be very difficult to sell on in Ireland if you ever wanted to do so.

no, not with Ableton, you really need an interated ssd or a hdd with at least 5400 rpm to run ableton these days or any days for the last decade or it will freeze quite frequently

Amazon warehouse are doing 20% of higher end laptops, good few macbook pros there which works out a saving of approx £400 (kicks in at checkout), pretty good

German retailer prices are much more competitive than here .

Look at these prices from Alternate.de ,shipping is 18.45 euro extra

    yep.

the 1660ti machine will still run games a lot better.

you can see from here that it's 50 to 60% more powerful compared to the 1650 card.

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/GeForce-GTX-1650-Laptop-vs-GeForce-GTX-1660-Ti-Laptop_9828_9641.247598.0.html

as I said, games performance is way more gpu-bound than cpu, especially wrt lower-end cards like the 1650 and low to mid cards like the 1660ti

the extra ram won't change much except for a very small % of games.

8gb cpu ram + 6gb gpu ram (1660ti) is plenty.
