Power of Attorney

Hey, looking for some information on POA. An elderly relative has Alzheimers and does not have a POA appointed. She is not in a position to be able to appoint one, however will need one soon as she is no longer able to handle her finances. I believe this can be done through the courts/solicitors. Anyone have any info on this and how to go about it and legal costs. Appreciate any info

If she is not compos mentis, AFAIK her affairs will have to be administered by the Wards of Court Office. She cannot set up an EPOA (Enduring Power of Attorney) unless a Doctor certifies that she is of sound mind.

Not a lawyer, but the above is correct. Power of attorney needs to granted while the person it concerns is mentally competent to make that decision, not after.

However if you are next of kin/close family you will still have strong input into medical decisions. Not sure about the position regarding finances.
