What are these like, My son has asked for one for xmas. He is 12

Trying to figure out if its suitable. I would rather wait and get him a phone in the summer when he goes to secondary school

just wondering if anyone has any information on them

Similar to an iphone, install games and apps on them.
plays mp3,s .Works off wifi.
To transfer music on them from a windows pc, you,ll need to install
itunes or a similar app on the pc.

another thing, is it difficult to get an app or someway to monitor the phone usage, eg calls, internet etc

use sdcard reader to put music on an a sdcard in a pc or a laptop.
than insert sd card into the phone ,s sdcard slot.
