I didn't realise it was the quarter finals but then I came to this very late...it makes me wonder what was in the initial line-up, for these to be the top 8! No offence to the artists or nominationers (is that a word) Thanks to Kolido these are hard polls to organise. I remember some top 100 poll could have been Radio Nova or Q back in the day (early 80's) that voted Baker Street the greatest hit of the decade (1970's) It's great to see it still hasn't lost its charm.

Is there such a thing as a One Hit Wonder in today's chart parlance? (I'm thinking the likes of Happy - Pharrell Williams and other annoying earworms :D)

Nice job all. I'm rooting for Safety Dance now because I think of the last 8 it fits the moniker best.

Are we still voting? What round is this? Pick two from the ones Kolido listed above?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Waiting on Kol to post the first round of the last 8.

Only like 2 songs of the last 8.

A lot of my favourites all went in the last round

2 of my nominations still in the running, and another 3 that I'd be happy if they won. Of the other three, two I'm meh about and I really don't want the third one to win.

I actually wouldn't mind any of the songs winning.
Baker Street and Don't Fear The Reaper aren't really my thing (meaning I wouldn't select to listen at home), but I can understand their value.

2025 gigs: Selofan, Alison Moyet, Wardruna, Gavin Friday, Orla Gartland, The Courettes, Nine Inch Nails, Rhiannon Giddens, New Purple Celebration, Nova Twins

    Think I'm exactly the same!
Delighted to have two of my nominations (Joy Division and Gerry Raferty) in the quarters :)

Some thoughts, since my reasoning for some votes were thin as f**k most of today - just glad I was able to participate at all in between filming scenes.

While a lot of my favourites were knocked out along the way, that's not a bad final 8 at all. Think Safety Dance probably got a round too far, but looking back at the songs it was up against in previous rounds (thanks quickbeam), fair enough that it got through to the quarter finals, but it's definitely the weakest of the remaining 8, even if it is an enjoyable song.

It's a shame Teenage Dirtbag and Crash went up against Don't Fear The Reaper and Baker Street in the last round, because would've been nice to see one or both of those in the quarter finals, but again fair enough, they were knocked out by two absolute classics.

I know a few have said it already, but thanks Kolido for running this tournament - been amazing so far and I'm looking forward to the endgame.

Hang on, how did Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue make it in to a One Hit Wonder competition.

Even allowing for the fact that they were a duet.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

How many Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue duets had hits?

I didn't nominate it, btw, but it's a valid OHW.

I don't agree, both artists have had huge success, even by the rules the artist has to be mostly known for that song and they are most definitely not.

Well you also think Joy Division is not a OHW even though it only had one hit in the UK or US charts.

Are the band known primarily for that song.... that's also a stipulation.

Three albums charting well says not OHW to me.

I for one don't know any other of their songs.

So Eagle eyed cherry completes the quarter finals lineup.

We will kick off the quarters now, first to 9 votes or leader after 1 hour.

Ah feck.. I've to head out for the evening. Christ knows what muck you'll put through.

    Sigh.

Don't Fear the Reaper and.. ugh.. Save Tonight, I guess.

Don't Fear The Reaper - easy choice, one of the greatest songs of all time. Although kudos to Wicked Game for getting this far, it's a great song too.

Save Tonight - I wish that I, that I could stay... Save this song, to fight another round. Potentially could be the overall winner for me if it gets that far.

Everything that can be said, has already been said, nothing left to do, but vote.

QF Match 1 - Chris Isaak - Wicked Game.

QF Match 2 - Eagle Eye Cherry - Save Tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,524 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Blue Oyster Cult - I think I like Wicked Game a lot more than most, but Reaper still beats it, what an intro

Joy Division - proper tune. I like Eagle Eye but it's a little fluffy. And he must be punished for his cover of Sun is Shining

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 6,912 Mod ✭✭✭✭Irish Aris

Chris Isaac - because it was in The Wild at Heart Soundtrack, and if David Lynch approves, then. . .

Joy Division - an absolute classic

2025 gigs: Selofan, Alison Moyet, Wardruna, Gavin Friday, Orla Gartland, The Courettes, Nine Inch Nails, Rhiannon Giddens, New Purple Celebration, Nova Twins

Chris Isaak - Vastly superior to cowbell novelty

Eagle Eye Cherry - Ian Curtis monotone becomes wearisome after a few listens

Wicked Game because it's so gorgeous and makes my insides do things

Save Tonight because memories and every time I hear it I have to sing along. Love it.
