I'm willing to believe it's not a marketing ploy.

You don't go to the effort of branding a place as a sports bar (their other market) to move a non sports bar in shortly after.

It was mentioned here ages ago that Porterhouse were getting out. How I see it is that Bodytonic take it on as another sports bar cause the Back Page is rammed. Separately the lease renewal on the BS - which is also their offices - falls apart

They decide to move it to their newest pub that hasn't even opened yet let alone established a base to get annoyed about it closing

It's smoking area is huge isn't it? Building is not listed from what I can see but that should probably be corrected as there is so little art deco in Dublin

Did you mean willing to believe it is a ploy?
He's totally using the Bernard Shaw closing to draw attention to his new place.

I'm not sure if it's listed or not but it certainly needs protection. It's quite an iconic building in an interesting location.

Nope. You didn't read my post very well.

It's pretty obvious the Whitworth thing was (initially) unrelated and probably going to be a loss on decor and fitout at this stage when rebranding so quickly.

Of course it was unrelated, no one could credibly dispute that.
His ploy is in pretending the new spot might use the Bernard Shaw name. There was never any chance of that happening.

In terms of decor, have you ever been to the Bernard Shaw? There isn't really much you can carry over.
Would he not just be sticking with the fitout already in place in the Whitworth?

Eatyard is 320m2 and the Whitworth smoking area is 91m2 (think some of this is also taken up by bins possibly). That's if you move the smoking area to the side space or out the front.

I wouldn't be surprised if the name is transferred. It looks like they were expecting to roll over the lease at a reasonable rate on the BS but couldn't and had to figure out what to do after rather a significant level of support appeared and they may well bin the entire sportsbar idea. The extant Whitworth fitout wouldn't work with the Bodytonic image but it may just be the same - its not near enough for me to drop in to check.

I must point out I've been to the Bernard Shaw about four times in the last ten years. I was a semi-regular but never that willing visitor in 06-09 before going to gigs in Tripod and didn't like listening to techno before trance gigs - all my mates did. I've no skin in this game.

I can't really see the same people who frequent the Bernard Shaw making it all the way over to Phibsborough. And that's nothing to do with the whole south/north snobbery thing some people have.

I'd have thought the Racket would be aiming for a higher class of customer. The kind of person who can afford to buy a house in Phibsborough.

Renovation is under way at The Quill on Arran Quay. Anyone know who's taken that on?

That area could do with a decent establishment. Seems to be boarded up for years. When did it officially close?

Planning to convert to accommodation as far as I remember; was it definitely renovation of the bar?

Its been off the licence register since at least 2009 but that does not mean it wasn't open and licenced later than that; the register cannot be taken as proof something isn't licenced!

Definitely renovation of the bar, but not necessarily as a bar, I guess.

Checked and there was planning for a cafe but the planning site is acting up so I can't see if there's a commencement on it

However they may be going for a bar again regardless of all that.

Whoever had that pub in the past it always attracted a regular, working class crowd, cant see that changing.

I've a friend in a creative/ad agency nearby. All the millennials can't wait until it opens under bodytonic.

I'd say the bald eagle nearby will feel the effects.

It opened under Bodytonic last week!

Girlfriend was in there last Saturday night with friends, said the place was empty and no bouncers on the door

I didn’t know it was open already.
Passed today and they were working on the windows outside.

I moved 7 months ago so dont go past on way to work anymore but noticed that Taproom 47 is finally open on King Street, is it any good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,855 ✭✭✭✭L1011

That's over two years since they started working on it!

Yeah I know, also a place called Bonobo open around the corner, 30 taps mostly crafties.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,855 ✭✭✭✭L1011

In Taproom 47. Lounge is primarily craft and more than half Irish (2x Rascals, 2x OHaras, Blacks, Four Provinces, Wicklow Wolf). Two Heineken and some Stone and Beavertown make up the rest

Think I can see the usual macros in the bar, but they're fully partitioned off like an older pub.

They'll probably be trying to get the old locals crowd that have lost the original incarnation of this as well as The Richmond (and Saints & Sinners long enough ago!) as well as any spillover from Bonobo.

Bar seems to be macros and their fraft, not sure if that's better or worse than the usual six lagers and four cider macro lineup

Stopped into the new Bernard Shaw for one on the way past last night. Eatyard had 4 stands. A burger place, vegan tacos, cupcakes and a Mexican place. Seating is a bit limited outside but I think there is still work to do.

Inside didn't seem much different from before but I didn't get a chance to look around fully. I was disappointed with the beer choice. Only 2 brewtonic beers and no rascals, hopefully or kinnegar which are all regulars in back page. I think there might have been a porterhouse tap too but could not see what one from where I was ordering

Hopefully they get some hopfully in :)

Their California Uncommon IPA is one of the nicest beers Ive tasted in years, on draught and in cans.

I had the Oyster Stout there on Saturday until they ran out about 10pm.
They ran out of an IPA as well, one that I think is a Rascals.

There were major sewage problems that needed serious attention according to one of the old lease holders. I remember the basement bar flooding regularly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,855 ✭✭✭✭L1011

There's no basement bar at all this time as far as I could see. Its a decently sized pub even without

So I dropped in last night to try get a better look around. They were sold out of all but the macro beers. They had taps for Porterhouse IPA, Oyster Stout and Plain and they also had Brewtonic relax the cacks.

I know they officially opened on Friday but it still feels like a soft launch and they are not fully ready to me.

Instead of having anything there I went across the road to bald eagle and had a hopfully california common :)

Is there a new pub called Plunketts on Abbey Steet?

No, they've just renamed the Adelphi again. "W. Plunket" is the new sign.
