Plan sounds spot on Conor. What I done wasnt good by any means basically jumping straight into Marathon Block with a really poor base (my own fault btw), I think going forward going into the Marathon Block with up to HM training already done will make it less taxing on the body, I found myself really tired at the start of my training as I was adapting to the increased load.

Hopefully catch up with you at JB.

Yeah Damo, it makes tons of sense doesn't it.

Am quite excited about it now. I really loved the past year but on reflection it was because I introduced a bit of 'stuff'. The previous couple of years were pretty basic.

Had worried about missing 5k specific stuff but am realising that I just love training.

Yeh the bit of 'stuff' if we can call it that, really does add to the enjoyment instead of just saying u have X miles to do on a Saturday morning.

I remember one of my long runs was 20 miles but full of 'stuff'. 5 easy, 5 @ 7:30, 3 easy, 5 @ 7:30, 2 @ 8:15. That was probably my favourite run of the whole block, such a confidence booster too ticking that off.

That's it. That feeling after a session is almost as good as a race.

Did last Friday's session early morn on the edge of the Naas Road in wind and rain and it was like a turbo boost for the whole day. Felt absolutely amazing, on fire in work. Love it.

Great to see this log motoring again.
I'd an idea you'd sign up for DCM 2020. You're right not to worry about time targets or strategies for now - see how the next few months go.

In the meantime, I'll probably be chasing you down the hill at Jingle Bells. See you there!

Have made the decision to switch to HR training.

Flirted with it for a while but never had a good handle on my MHR so couldn't trust the zones, also couldn't trust the FR235 wrist monitor.

Was thinking about it for a while, but in the last week or so it seems the stars have aligned for it. Heard those ads on the radio for the new Beacon sports clinic's vo2max tests. Got in touch with them primarily about that and got chatting to a guy, a runner himself and HR training expert. Told me about a threshold test they do.

I'm going to do it. Half marathon training is all about threshold, basing it off pace is always gonna be guesswork. Could be 4:22km today, 4:30 tomorrow.

Need recommendations on a good comfy chest strap. Garmin one is about €70, but have seen some for around €25. Any tips?

I'm looking forward to following your HR training C.

Any thoughts on whether you will follow a HR specific plan such as those of Matt Fitzgerald (80/20), or will you just use HR to guide your various efforts easy/tempo etc?

I have this strap though i paid a lot less for it on Chain Reaction.

Editted to add it's comfortable, i've never had any chaffing from it anyhow.

    Hey E, thanks a mill.

At the moment my plan was to follow the half plan from FRR, and use HR to guide the effort, but I'll do a bit of digging into that.

I've yet to study the method really, will do so over the next few weeks and make some decisions then with a bit more knowledge.

Exciting times ahead C and it seems like you are nailing down what your plans are; absolutely bags of potential where your running is concerned.

It will be interesting to hear how the testing goes; I know one of the lads from the club done proper testing (I think it was in UCD); HR based training is something I should probably read up on more; or maybe I should start by wearing a HR strap even for my own information!

Get the testing done commit to the plan and big gains will be coming your way in 2020.

Thanks so much C, yeah, am very excited about the months ahead.

The more I think about HR training the more it seems like the logical move.

Feel in good shape for Jingle Bells, a little less inner bravado than a few weeks ago though. Felt then a 19:35/40 was do-able, am not so sure now.

Am comparing everything to the lead up to Bob Heffernan. Sessions have been marginally better, endurance runs have been a good stretch better, pace range wise. The two tune up races were a little disappointing though. Pretty much identical to the last time.

I was in the best shape of my life in the run up to BH, so on one hand it's good that I'm there or thereabouts now, if not marginally fitter. Want improvement though. Then again, maybe I'm putting too much weight on the tune ups. We'll see.

Course profile change obviously makes notions of my original hopes too :)

    Guaranteed course PB!

We were disappointed when we were notified about the road works ( and only fairly recently aswell); a bit of a scramble to get the route planned and measured also; it is still a fast course with a bit of a sting coming out the Fury Glen before a fast finish.

Still definite PB potential and another JB mug for the collection.

Oh I'm not put out by it at all C, annoyed me to hear of people giving out about it on fb.

Can't wait for it, such a fantastic race.

Oh, I was chatting to some clubmates of yours yesterday, Claire (I think) and Stephen, we were all saying how much a sound lad you are :)

Bit of a sh1tshow of a week. Ran the scheduled 6 miler on Tue morn. Had been feeling slightly under the weather on and off for a couple of weeks, the joys of a creche going 2 year old in the gaff. Woke up Tue morn feeling a little raspy in the throat, took every ounce of me to get going.

Had to leave work early that day and get to bed. Been pretty much in bed or lazing about since, zapped of energy and aches. Starting to feel better this evening, but I missed a good Vo2max session this morning.

Yet to have a training block without these interruptions.

There's a mini session scheduled for Mon. I might skip that and do today's one on Saturday, all going well. Don't think I'm up to doing anything tomorrow. Bah.

Same as yourself on the illness front. Take your time with it. I'm not back yet. The body will know when it's OK to get back out there.

Cheers man, that sucks. Can be a rough time of year once you're exposed to crap.

I'm back fit now thankfully. Ran the session on Saturday after a parkrun warmup. Really struggled with it, don't think I was ready. Was either do it or forget it though.

Have ran every day since but this morning was the first time I felt good again.

Not sure what to expect now on Saturday. Session paces were really slow, although not sure what I can take from that.

Hope you get back running v soon.

    I'm still buzzing.

Tapered from a week out, all short recovery paced stuff bar some strides and 800 at race pace on Thursday.

Had an easy night on Friday, had a couple of beers but bed early. No beer & early nights Sat and Sunday had me feeling amazing. Took a half day on Monday and Tuesday off. Monday night was tough though. Was helping my wife get a college project over the line, her big day was Tue too. Was very irritable and irrational, proper taper madness. She asked me to paint a model spiral staircase with red nail varnish and I was convinced the fumes were knocking double digits off my Vo2max :p Mad stuff.

Got to bed late and had a rough sleep. Felt wrecked on Tuesday. Mother in law saved the day though, she came up to look after the kids and I rocked off for an hour's sleep at about 3pm.

Had a good laugh after when I told our whattsapp group I just had a nap, Omeceron replied 'good man, that's what the Kenyans do' :pac:

Left good and early, listened to my go to playlist on the way down to get revved up, went over all my training in my head convincing myself that this was doable.

Met Sean and C (Scotindublin) in the car park and we had a look at the map of the route, Sean giving great guidance. Went for a warm up recce of the last 2k with Sean, then on up to the start area. Just shy of 4 miles total. Met up with Murph there for a nice nervous chat about our expectations.

Did a couple of strides then got into the pack with Sean. Was a bit concerned about how tight it seemed. Looked like we were gonna be forced to run a bit in this knee high grass verge. Not good. Just then there was a bit of commotion as the lead car was trying to inch through the packed crowd.
This worked out great for us, the car caused the crowd to part and we got sucked in in it's wake and ended up in the middle of the road about 20 feet back from the start. Perfect.

Gun went and we took off. Was congested but it was fine, everyone around was running my pace or faster, no getting hemmed, no hold ups, no dodging.

Checked the watch and I was bang on, 4:00 pace. Slight drag up the dual carriageway but felt really comfortable.
Sean arrived at my side after 400m or so. No words. Can't afford words.
We turned the bend, which wasn't as tight as I had been warned, no slow down at all. First km beeped 3:59. Brilliant.

Everything still felt comfortable enough but I knew the pain was in the post. Sean had moved on from me by about 20 yards, I let him go as I was still bang on pace and on target. Km 2 beeped 3:56. Inner fist pump. This is on. Jesus.

Pain came around 2.5k. Got held up a touch by a car on the road and a line of runners I couldn't get past. Got by them then and turned to see Murph on my left shoulder, I muttered hello D, but probably sounded more like 'mauhayoo desh'. Km 3 beeped 4:02.

Real pain now. Flicking between doubt and belief. We're into familiar road now from the warm up recce. I'm telling myself how close we are. Can hear the MSB 20 min pacer helping his comrades right behind me. It's helping me. Try to glance around at him to, I don't know why, nothing is making sense, my brain is boiling. I want this so bad. Watch beeps 4:06. Balls.

It's downhill from here. I can do this. So much expectation, can't let everyone down. I'm thinking about ariana, kellygirl, baby75, everyone here, don't want to fail, don't want a damp squib after all my hard work. Want it so bad.
I make some quick calculations and incorrectly deduce that I need a 4min last km to get there. I pick it up and dig deep. 3:55 on the watch. Then 3:53. Humpback bridge that feels like a mountain. People all around me gunning for it, we're animals. Pain. 500 to go. Kick. Pain. I can do this. 3:50 on the watch. Can't stop checking the watch. I'm looking at the distance and the pace. Weirdly, not the time. Stride by stride with a girl who's also kicking hard. Gantry comes into view and 20 is flashing, not counting, flashing. I'm confused. Guy on the mike is shouting 'give these guys a round of applause, the last of the sub 20s' about the guys ahead crossing. I don't know what's happening. Crossed the mat and pressed the button.

Looked down at 19:58, punched the air and let out a roar. Then died. 19:56 chip.

Km 5 clocked in at 3:51. Turned out I needed a 3:54 last km. I'm not sure how I would have handled it had I not got the maths wrong. Who knows.

Met Sean straight after for a fist bump after his incredible performance, then C came along dripping in sweat with a massive smile on his face after cracking 18. Singer then joined us again with a massive smile after a cracking pb.

Day of Irish pbs came early. What a night. Drove home with tunes and fists pumping.

I'm so so happy. I said upthread that I wouldn't be too disheartened if I didn't crack it at BH but truth be told, I would have been. I've put 20 weeks of hard work into it and had a lot of patience. To actually pull it off gives me immense satisfaction.

I want to thank all you guys, on here and in our little whattsapp group for giving me such great positive vibes, encouragement and self belief.

    Believe.

Reading this this morning to give me some belief. Pumped now for it, confidence built a little. Ready for the pain.

Ah but your focus is Bohermeen though isn't it. Great performance while half training, especially not long after a session.
