On an Olympus Digital Recorder VN-900 I have recorded a speech which was accompanied by music played on a flute for effect. The trouble is that the flautist positioned himself near to my recording device, although he was playing softly the fact that he was nearer to the recorder than the orator the speech is relegated to the background. Given that this is a standard recording device is there any way (software) that might reduce the music and bring out the speech?

Audacity has a "Vocal Reduction and Isolation" plugin. It works on the basis of band-pass filtering, so how well it (or any other tool) works will depend on to what extent the speech and flute frequency ranges overlap.

    Worth a try, I'd say.
