    From RTE:

A statement released on Saturday night read: "The Board of the Football Association of Ireland announces the resignation with immediate effect of Executive Vice President and former CEO John Delaney.

"This follows talks between the parties. The FAI will fulfil certain notice and pension obligations as agreed between the parties.

"Mr Delaney served as CEO of the FAI from 2005 to March of 2019 during which time the FAI became partners in the new Aviva Stadium.

"In 2017, he was elected to the UEFA Executive and in March of this year, he moved to a role of Executive Vice-President of the FAI."

Damned, not with faint praise, but with no praise at all. That's as terse as you could get. They might as well have said "and take your damn horse with ya!"

What's there to praise though and if there was then they know better not to after what's went down this year. Dude probably got quite the golden handshake and a nice little pension, they know better than to keep it terse. Especially when there's others still on the inside who are just as big if not bigger parasites than John Delaney.

A statement released on Saturday night...

It says so much about the FAI that, for all their talk of reform, first and foremost on their mind was how to time the news to avoid the full scrutiny of the Sunday newspapers.

I know people are probably thinking he got away with it but the man has lost everything despite his pay off

He won't be at Euro 2020 as "The Man". He may not be even able to attend at all.

He'll never get his dream of a job with UEFA/FIFA.

He'll never get a high profile Sports Administration Job ever again.

He has lost his model girlfriend, who dumped his ASAP when he got dropped.

He has lost his celebrity status.

He has bucket loads of cash but has lost all of his dreams.

somethings coming out in the morning im guessing....

Doesn't seem to be. Sunday Times journalist (not Mark Tighe) tweeted last night that they had a story about there being talks between Delaney and FAI about him leaving.

Unless they just wanted to get ahead of that. Same old FAI though. Releasing the story after the print deadline...

Scrutiny of the Sunday papers? Because they hold so much importance in modern society. What scrutiny do you think the FAI wished to avoid as opposed to every radio station, Twitter, TV show, digital publication that will pick it up?

Print media is important. Would it have come to this if it wasn't for the work of journalists like Mark Tighe?

Yes there'll be commentary in other mediums but it says a lot about the attitude of those involved that they release a statement at 11pm on a Saturday night. What other motive is there for leaving it that late? Did talks in abbotstown go deep into the night?

Well maybe the talks ended yesterday evening so why not release the news immediately?

He has lost his model girlfriend, who dumped his ASAP when he got dropped.

Has he? Hadn’t seen that reported anywhere.

Surprised he can’t be charged criminally for what he was doing with finances let alone that he is still entitled to a pension from FAI.

Good auld Ireland. Wait until the worst of the scandal blows over then send them off with a golden handshake. Nothing ever changes.

So the timing was purely coincidental?

Pensions are untouchable in Ireland regardless of what a person does. Neither the politicians, civil service or legal profession would be in any rush to try and change that either.

Who knows or cares... Do you honestly think the news was delayed so some hack in the Sindo has to wait a week to write their 2000 words.... Cause that would blow the whole thing wide open... It is clear that the story (or non story) broke... Case in point it is being discussed here.... The fact that it missed the scrutiny of the Sunday papers makes what difference?

They knew the Sunday Times was running the story about there being talks between the FAI and Delaney as they would have been asked for comment. Let's get one over on them by letting them run an out of date story and we"ll make the announcement afterwards.

It's demonstrative of the FAI's attitude towards journalists who have been attempting to hold them to account.

Lads, companies/organisations/individuals have been dumping negative news on Friday & Saturday evenings since forever in order to skip part of the news cycle. This is nothing new.

I'm not showing sympathy for him, I'm revelling in it. He's lost it all. Now he's just a wealthy, lonely man.

Nobody is denying that. The problem lies in the fact that the FAI vowed to be more open, honest amd accountable then the pull this one

So no big story broke this morning?

Same old FAI I am affraid, nothing has changed except JD got a pay off and pension. Taking fans for fools......Conway said he wants a transparent FAI and change......What do they do......

    1. Late on Sat. let the info out, ensure the Sunday papers cant react
    2. Hides the deal behind a NDA with JD
    3. Pays the man a payoff and pension, surely they have grounds to sack him with nothing*

*that is unless he is keeping his mouth shut on what the other board members have been up too, or better said what they havent been doing when pocketing from the FAI.

Affraid its not enough lads, these boys are not in it for the good of Irish football, they are in it for themselves and their egos. This was a chance for the FAI to show they want change, be transparent and give us details on the deal they have done, however they are hiding yet again.

I know you're new to this conversation, and so you may have no idea of the role played by the Sunday Times. You also may have forgotten that the cracks first really appeared because Delaney sought to injunct the Sunday Times back in March, and lost. They didn't not seek injunctions against "every radio station, Twitter, TV show, digital publication" that you deem more relevant in modern society.

You seem to know a lot about him... How'd you know he got dumped

    He hasn't lost it all.

He's very wealthy. Wealthier than I'd imagine almost everyone who posts on this forum. I know you're not sticking up for him, but saying he has lost everything simply isn't true.

He can use his wealth to fly Nadia Forde in for a chat if he's lonely.

Isn't he already in a UEFA gig?

I'm sure his bucket of cash will be of some consolation to him.

Good. We need to know the cost of this. Who knows what he got out of them in the end.

he wanted to have a more senior position, he is only on the board by virtue of position in the FAI which he no longer has

Does he definitely lose the UEFA gig now he is out of his national association or is there some way he can drift back in once the fuss does down.
