CPU Upgrade from i5 3570K

Hi,

Built my own PC a few years back with great advice from this forum. Have since upgraded the GPU to a 1070 which will likely do me for a while more.

Now looking to upgrade the CPU and looking for something that I can overclock as the i5 3570k served me well.

I have a case, GPU, monitor, keyboard and SSD. Will need a CPU, mobo, RAM and PSU. My current PSU is at the limit so will need an upgrade.

I mainly run X-Plane which is a beast for resources and I'm CPU limited. Budget of around €700.

I already have a copy of Windows purchased last time. Will I need another OEM version when I change the CPU and mobo?

Stuff requires less power now rather than more. I'd look at the ryzen 5 3600.

I'm in a similar boat actually, still running the i5 3570k on a z77 extreme4. Looking at the Ryzen 5 3600 but can't decide on a mobo.

I'm thinking the B450 Tomahawk Max as it supports 3rd gen Ryzen out of the box, good features at an okay price. Could spend extra for an x570 board but can't see much actual benefit. Prob won't be utilising PCIe 4 for anything. Maybe one would get longer support over a b450 board..

In fairness, unless it was a great PSU it's going to be 5-6 years old now & out of warranty - replace it with something better.

The lame (but cheap) option is just to stick an i7 3770K in there.

3770K is 7 years old at this stage. If you've the budget, better to do a clean platform upgrade.

Looked at that, but I think the gains would be minimal. I have my 3570k overclocked to a steady 4.6ghz.

Cheers. Might be a little bit of headroom for a faster processor. What are the options?

3700X (still don't know why they put 'X' in it) and the B450 Max is around £440, so just £70 more than 3600 + X570 - possibly better value unless you really want PCI 4.0 and a better motherboard.

Beyond that you'd be looking at a i9-9900K or a 3900X, but those are in the £400-500 range

Oh, and Amazon has i7-9700k for £315 now (usually around £379), which is starting to look like good value. It's generally faster (in gaming!) than the 3700X, but doesn't have hyperthreading. i5-9600k down to £215 as well.

I went with the Gigabyte Aorus EliteZ390 and a 9700K awhile ago,pretty happy with it.
