I was driving through Dublin today. I noticed an expensive poster advertising the details of a councillors clinics. I think this Councillor may possibly be a candidate in a by election.

I actually this poster is illegal.

The electoral amendment act 2009 states

“(7) Notwithstanding subsection (6), it shall not be an offence for a person to exhibit an advertisement if the advertisement—

    (a) is exempted development within the meaning of the Planning and Development Act 2000 , or is a notice displayed or erected in pursuance of a requirement by or under any enactment,

    (b) advertises a public meeting, other than an auction, unless the advertisement has been in place for 30 days or more prior to, or for 7 days or more after, the date specified in the advertisement for the meeting,

I do not believe that a clinic is a "public meeting" because it is where individuals go in privately to meet the politician.

    Anyone any thoughts on that?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Poster on a billboard or somewhere else?

I think it would be a stretch to claim a regular clinic is a public meeting myself. I doubt is is giving a single date for starters

    Its like an election poster

    It has a specific date.

A poster on a public lamp post?

Sounds very questionable to me. You could report it to DCC and let the litter wardens deal with it.

If it's a bus shelter advert or something where the Councillor has paid for advertising space, there's nothing wrong with that.
