Smallest Shop in Ireland - in the Barnes's Gap

    Came across this delightful card on eBay tonight (it can be yours for £29!) but a screen-grab will do me. Apart from the shop and its proprietor who must have been around before the flood, the card was used to enter "The Mystery Sound" competition on the legendary Gay Byrne radio show (1973-1998). I'd love to hear if anybody has memories of the shop, the contestant or anything else... :D

    Thanks for that Facebook link; there even seems to be a dispute about the actual location. I suspect that we will never know the answer to the Quiz though as it's probably subject to copyright or GDPR. :D

    Was there a small shop like that between Termon and Creeslough? Would have been in the seventies or early eighties?

    There was. Not far from where the old viaduct was / is

    It was on the side of the road near the old abandoned house, on the straight piece of road on the Termon side of the turn for Glen. The ruins were visible up until recently - haven't travelled that wee bit of the road recently so I don't know if they're still there.

    the photo of Irelands smallest shop in the postcard was indeed there as I used to stop when i was a teen and the lady who owned it (Mary Den) used to give some rock candy. I would climb the rocks in back of the old house in the early seventy's. THE last time I visited the old house was perhaps 1980 with a great uncle and I think Jimmy was still alive raking in the hay in the field adjacent to the house. The house had a dirt floor and he kept sheep dogs about. The old ruin of a house across the road in the Gap was inhabited by 'Jimmy Den', who allegedly once told a tale of being kidnapped by the little folk for three days. He was found slumped up against a chuch gable wall and was so traumatised by the event that he rarely ever spoke of the encounter ever again. I think the owner was a cousin of my granny. Not certain however as no one left to tell the tale!
