Sockets out, fuses ok?

    Any suggestions please...
    Just moved into house, all good for a week. This morning all sockets are dead. Power to lights, cooker but not sockets. All switches up on fuseboard, three marked sockets are in same position as lights etc.
    Not yet familiar with the area but will find an electrician tomorrow, meanwhile, any suggestions? Thanks.

    Yea check your rcd, usually to the left of the socket mcbs, will have a button marked test. If it's tripped there is probably a faulty appliance, typically something high current with water: immersion, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer etc...

    Thanks, yes. The rcd 'sockets and shower' switch is horizontal, not up. Won't go up. You are right it seems to have been putting on the immersion that did it. Will get someone to look at it tomorrow.

    Turn off the immersion mcb, turn off immersion switches in hot press. Some rcds need to be pulled down before being pushed up. If it trips when immersion is on, time for a new element.

    Ok, back to laptop, can't cope with posting on the phone!

    Thanks, yes that worked. Looks like the immersion is banjaxed. Once it was switched off the switch then went on for the rest of the sockets and all is working (apart from the immersion, obviously).

    Thanks for your help, I should have been able to figure that out myself but we have just moved house, I am completely frazzled and the brain isn't working :D .

    If the cylinder is in good condition a new element is all that is required. Element should be cheap, no idea on the fitting cost.

    Lol, someone replacing an element in an immersion heater once before managed to set the house on fire, fire brigade, the lot! And another drama with a burned out time clock in another house. I don't much like immersion heaters. Anyway a good bit of work to be done on new boiler etc so a cylinder element is small stuff :D
