Going way off topic here but David Benioff's books are great, particularly City of Thieves, which is an amazing novel. I wish he would concentrate on novels instead of tv/film.

I think that only proves he can write and weave a story perfectly well, they just took the fast, rushed, lazy route out of Game of Thrones instead of handing it over to someone who would do it justice.

Wouldn't rule out their next whatever though, but having said that I'm not sure "from the creators of Game of Thrones" is really that ringing an endorsement, especially when more GOT stuff is also on the way. Look at Nightflyers...."From George RR Martin, the writer behind Game of Thrones" - didn't help it one bit, mega flop.

They aren't creators in my opinion. They adapted someones books, and when it came to do their own original writing it was a disaster totally out of sync with the original writing. I listened to their reasoning behind their writing for the last season and it was written to please the masses. So I have no interest in more of that, and there's nothing in either of their pasts to suggest they will do anything original or creative.

The change of pace in order to wrap up the story in the last 2 seasons was never going to work. A complete story wasn't possible.

even GRRM is struggle to get out the tangled corner he has written himself into.

GRRM has a lot more characters/side stories going on in the books than the show, they could have easily fleshed out and wrapped it up in two (full) seasons tbh..

D&D got all the hate because they pretty much cut and run on what was to be one of the best shows in television history, all because they didnt want to pass the torch and instead make star wars movies sooner rather than later..

Yeah it's a weak defence. The story itself was fine (and obviously from a technical pov the whole thing was very well put together), they just tried to cram about 20 episodes into six.

The first two episodes were fine though. It's the last 4 that were the major problem. No weight to it at all, just constant crash/bang/whallop/crap dialogue/race to the finish line.

I think acting like the dumpster fire S8 turned out to be, compared to older stuff, is actually a natural problem of conclusion is a cop-out. It just needed more room to breathe and progress organically like other seasons. I have no doubt with the exact same story but just a few more episodes and it would have been positively received across the board in most cases.

The problem GRRM faces is very different. It's not about bringing major character arcs to a close like the show was, it's because he has a million things going on in the books (90% don't exist in the show) and trying to tie hundreds of little strands and side plots together is proving understandably really difficult.

The speed with which the internet turned against Benioff and Weiss would make your head spin. From the toast of viral TV to its main villains. I guess it really is true a good story can't survive a bad ending. Outlets are reporting a 9 figure deal with the two, so I'd say neither feel particularly hunted by those slighted over the final season of GoT

Yeah. It’s reminiscent to what happened to Lindelof after lost ended. Lindelof took it badly. If I'm remembering it correctly he had a meltdown on Twitter and then closed his account. :D

Creator, writer, adapter, however you choose to classify them it seems premature to dismiss all of their future work off of one bad season. No one knows how their next projects are going to turn out.

And since there are plenty of GoT threads, I'll try and get back on topic. :)

Anyone try Wu Assassins yet? I'm getting through Warrior at the moment so will probably move on to something non Martial Arts before Wu Assassins to break things up a bit.

I like to save series' episodes up and and watch one a day/every 2 days; just checked on Netflix and all episodes are up, for those that like to do the same (or who like to binge). Love that.

In the Fade - German film, about a woman who seeks revenge after her family is involved in a tragedy. Hard to say much about it without spoilers but it’s an excellent film, won the Globe for best foreign language, with Diane Kruger winning best actress at Cannes. Highly recommend it, meant to mention on here before but had forgotten.

I'm actually kinda glad to hear that. Too many shows these days are being flogged to death, Arrested Development being the first one that springs to mind.

Glad to see good quality material not being destroyed.

Yeah I agree, I really enjoyed the last series but one more is enough - arrested development I gave up after its resurrection on netflix it was poor.

The description of Wu Assassins sounds a bit meh, but Iko Uwais (Rama in The Raid & The Raid 2) is the lead so I'll check out at least an episode or two.

Fahrenheit 11/9 is a serious eye-opener, I always knew the States was corrupt but **** me the place has serious problems to put it mildly

Watched the 12th man based on a few recommendations here.

Very good film, hell of a true story. Maybe Netflix's best movie, can't think of many other contenders.

Also, not on Netflix, but I'm watching The Loudest Voice with Russell Crowe as Roger Ailes the creator of fox news, really interesting and well made.

Looking fwd to Glow season 3.

Not on Netflix but watch Vice with Christian Bale. It’s about Dick Cheney and how politics and business are interwoven. Career politicians looking after themselves at the expense of everyone.

Love city of thieves!! I would love an adaptation of that. Or yeah, some more novels.

I'm very wary about how Michael Moore frames things. While there's truth in what he's saying, he takes so many liberties with his material in the interest of storytelling that he loses a lot of integrity imo.

So finished The Naked Director. Quite unusual for a Japanese drama these days - very much designed to be accessible to an international audience as much as a domestic one.

This is mostly a good thing. It does feel like it has had its edges smoothed down a bit - somewhat lacks the character of the directors’ previous work (although not familiar with the work of the filmmaker behind the last three episodes). It’s still very Japanese in terms of context and culture (whether genitals are sufficiently censored is a major plot point :pac:), but the whole thing plays out more like a traditional western crime drama than you’d typically find in J-cinema.

Generally felt like a mix of Narcos and Boogie Nights in some ways. Little bit awkwardly straddles the line between comedy and bleak crime drama, but for the most part it hits the mark: while there are clearly ‘heroes’ and villains, it doesn’t shy away from the seediness of the porn industry everyone’s involved with. It’s very slickly made, and far greater production values than I’d expect from contemporary Japanese productions (either TV or film). Clearly benefits from Masaharu Take overseeing affairs: the first two episodes really benefit from his smart, witty framing of scenes (few better directors of montages working today).

It has its problems (pretty much all the female characters bar one are weirdly neglected, for one) and it’s definitely been designed for wide appeal for better and worse. But I was generally impressed and happily flew through the series in a few days (eight episodes is a perfect number). It’s a hell of a yarn that achieves the right mix between true story and entertaining fabrication, and I’m happy to see good Japanese directors given plenty of resources for once. Seems to be minimum chatter about it on the web so far, but could easily see it being a foreign language hit if it does gain a bit of traction and isn’t just buried by Netflix like so many before it.

Maybe dicussed earlier, but I watched " the guilty" last night and really enjoyed. A Danish drama about 999 operator trying to sort out an abduction. Basically one man and a phone but quite riveting.

Like 12th Man, Unbroken is another endurance movie set in WWII. An American pilot crash lands and survives 45 days in a dingy only to be captured by the Japs and sent to a POW camp under the command of sadistic bustard. Good movie 7/10.
