Should all headlines have a word in inverted commas ?

    Headlines from today's www.independent.co.uk include :

    'perverse'
    'ruthlessly'
    'dead'
    'seduced'
    'extreme'
    'throat slashed'
    'blasphemous'
    'shameful'
    'love hormone'

    All very well.

But some headlines without a word in inverted commas seem to have slipped by the editor. Sloppiness ? Or a radical policy of trying to write headlines without a single word using them ?

Or on RTE with "so-called Islamic State" they are not "so-called" when they are targeted for a reason.

I think it's sloppy and non accountable journalism.

Or else it’s just separating out the alleged part of the story from the factual part of the story

I think it’s incredibly lazy for a poster to start a thread listing individual words from headlines without any direct links to those stories so others can judge if those words were justifiably included in that format in those headlines

    Chomsky(2017) on the Republican party

"Has there ever been an organisation in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organised human life on Earth?"

You are misunderstanding the use of "so called" there. It is questioning their legitimacy to claim to be a sovereign entity. They *want* to be called Islamic State.

    Maybe....
I always presumed it as so because the same story would be run by sky news and they would state them Islamic state whereas RTE use the phrase so-called considering it is the same story.

That would be down to each organisations style guide.

I think its incredibly lazy for a poster not to click the link which included all the quotes in the top third of the page before they respond to a post criticising the absence of links.
Similar syndrome there any day with the Indo, which on its present trend may well soon have all headlines fully enclosed in inverted commas.
