I think its crazy that people are giving out about United going for Maguire, who was part of a Leicester defence that beat City at home and kept them scoreless away barring a screamer. Also part of a Leicester defence which held Liverpool to a draw at Anfield. He would be great.

Yes his price is a lot compared to other transfers but that's the market and he would improve our defence tenfold so let's hope we get it done.

Signing maguire for crazy money will happen, regardless of whether or not its us or City or whoever eventually get hm.

Yes, he's not the best defender in the world considering he will most likely go for a world record fee, but he is a hell of a lot better than the majority of people are giving him credit for. There is a reason that Man City, the best team the premier league has possibly ever seen, are trying to sign him also.

He has proven clearly his worth in the Premier league, he is a no brainer for us considering how defensively weak our centre halves (bar Lindelof) are. He also seems like a really humble, down to earth lad which would be a welcome addition in our changing room of self proclaimed superstar/rappers/dancers/designers. We need a signing like him more than any other team do imo.

Sure, we could take a chance on a younger defender with potential but we're still probably looking at spending 50 million even for that, and it's more of a gamble.

I know which option I would prefer anyway.

Maguire for 70 million pound? Is Woodward having a laugh? Harry Maguire? Jokeshop continues. Absolutely clueless.

I don't know why you're all getting upset about the price of Maguire. If the money isn't spend on players it'll just go towards Darcie Glazers new kitchen anyway.

I don’t think the argument is that people rather rather no one that Maguire.

The debate is whether he’s worth it or if we should be after other targets, and how big a risk we should be taking with the signing.

Is there really concrete interest from City or is this just yet another fictitious City/United "bidding war" that we're getting a bum deal from?

Apparently they are pretty reliable for Croatian news.

Ive done the necessary youtube scouting. Seems very quick on the ball, quick dribbling and very good close control.

lot of people are not happy with Maguire, but what are the alternatives? i like maguire, he isnt Cannavaro or franco baresi or may not be a supreme althlete but he is premier league proven, a bit in the mould of steve bruce. there really isnt a stand out player that we should go for, but thee is no doubt maguire will improve us

    Alternatives are:

    Maguire : 75m -
Diop : 50m - At 22 he improving & already seems to have all the tools required to be a top defender. i think he can make the step up but wont come cheap, and only has 1 year in the Premier league behind him. that said, id love to have him at United.
Koulibaly: 100m - At 28, 100m is extremely expensive and unproven in Premier league. he does look the real deal tho and would improve us no end, but i cant see it happening for that money.
Alderweireld : 25m - At 30 years of age his longevity is questionable. missed a lot of games in 17/18 through injury and doesnt seem to fit the profile Ole is going for
Konate : 50m - At 20, he is a little inexperienced. But has huge ceiling and ever present in RB Leibzig side that finished 2nd in Bundesliga. looked the part in u21 Championship recently. he is a colossal of a defender. a young version of Koulibaly. He prob wouldnt come cheap though id love to have him. Would need patience and time from fans/manager coming into the Premiership.
Upamecano : 40m - At 20, he is raw and inexperienced but developing into a top CB. Would also need patience and time from fans/manager coming into the Premiership.
Dias : 45m - At 22, he is at a stage to make the next steps. Questionable if he would be suited to the Premier League. Still nothing ventured, nothing gained.

It's a great purchase. And we are desperate for another midfielder (well the fans are)

From that list you'd splash the 20mil more and go for Koulibaly surely? Or spend half and get 4 years from Alderwiereld? Maguire is an upgrade on anyone you guys can put beside Lindelof but there's no chance on a VVD-style impact from him. I'd take a roll of the dice on Koulibaly with a chance that he could do.

If this is true we should absolutely not go back with another offer and move onto another target. Yes we need a CB but I see nothing special about Maguire to warrant anything near the price Liverpool paid for VVD. Maguire isn't even half the player VVD is.

I'm not saying Maguire is bad but I honestly don't get the hype besides him being young and English. I see a slightly above average CB everytime I see him play, nothing more.

LCFC looking for a record fee for him is just an insult. We should not be entertaining a second bid at all and ruling him out. An opening bid of 40m would have been a good starting point, this amount is just silly.

To be honest, i dont know. Koulibaly is 28 and Alderwiereld, 30. It looks from the outside, that Ole is going for younger players, with premier league experience. That seems to be the profile, so it looks like Maguire is Plan A and Diop is Plan B. Koulibaly is the best defender of the lot, but why we or any other club havent gone for him is a slight mystery. Or maybe the mystery is that there is no way clubs will pay 100m for a 28 year old centre back, that hasnt played in the Premier League. even players like Vidic and Evra took time to adapt to the Premiership. lot of good players can struggle in this league. With Alderwiereld, maybe we get 3 years out of him. 25m is a steal for a player of his quality thats for sure. but in 2-3 years we are looking for a defender again and back to square one.

I haven't noticed much of that on here to be honest... perhaps a little overpriced, but makes sense to go get him given Utds lack of quality at the back. Also a bit surprised yee haven't already snapped up Alderweireld as well, given his buyout clause. Would be a great partner for Maguire, and the pair of them would be streets ahead of any partnership at the club now.

Toby may be 30, but for CB's that's not so bad really. Not much resale in him, but his cost is so low that that doesn't matter. Well worth a 3 or 4 year contract - and while youth elsewhere is always a good move, you really want experience at CB, especially during a bit of a period of transition.

    Just a slightly related quesiton;
In your opinion should we have signed a CB last summer? Do we need one now?

**** sake we could probably get Alderwiereld and Diop for the same price we'll end up blowing on Maguire

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,320 ✭✭✭v3ttel

I really like Maguire - he stood out at Sheff United and Hull in any game I watched them a few years ago. He's done very well at Leicester too. I know he's a good age, English, very good defensively, homegrown and all the rest but £75m+ would be crazy for him.

I would happily take Alderweireld (£25m) and Diop (£50m) for the price of Maguire. Alderweireld, Diop, Lindelof and Bailly would be a strong quartet of options at CB. I would assume that Alderweireld doesn't want to join and that's the only reason he's not signed up already.

It wouldn't make sense for Woodward, it's marketing first and foremost.
Surely folks know this at this stage :P

He didn't do that on his own. They've a good defence, shielded by an excellent midfield. He was part of the defence that shipped 4 against Palace, was rubbish against Utd, sent off inside 4 mins against Burnley. Is entirely prone to a brainfart.

The matches he excels in are the backs to the walls type games it seems, lots of clearances, tackles, headers won. All heart, no head. We need a defender who can read a game. Knows where the ball is going to be going and knows how to close space before an attacker is even thinking of it. Maguire is not that. Being raved about like he's the second coming of Franco Baresi, when he's somewhere between Gary Cahill and John Terry

I didn't say that he did it on his own though. But he played a vital part of those games. And of course he will have his bad games as would anyone in a Leicester team. Van Dijk was the same at Southampton.

We will have many games next season where that will be the case. He does have a head and is very intelligent in how he reads the game and can play a pass.

Nobody is talking like he is anywhere near the levels or Baresi, Terry, Vidic, Ferdinand or anyone like that right now, but he is a huge improvement on what we have.

Would you rather we didn't sign him and had the same fellas for next year? We won't sign De Ligt and after that who are we realistically going to sign. Diop will be easily £60m and Koulibaly £100m plus? Money isn't an option and Maguire makes sense.

seen him live a few times last season, he was the stand out player in a dinamo team that won the league here and made a decent run in the europa league, 40million seems like too much but he is a quality player.

Simple really, there was no concrete information anywhere to say we were, someone like Simon Stone reporting we've put in a bid/been rejected/players doesn't want to come to United, etc.
