A Question re An Post

    If somebody goes into a Post Office say, In Germany and sends a parcel to the back of beyond in Ireland who pays An Post to deliver it ? or even a letter to the Aran Islands from Australia, How is anyone keeping track of it or do they just deliver each others stuff ? Just wondering ? Thanks

    I've thought about this since we used to holiday as kids in the Isle of Man and send postcards home. I remember reading that the IoM Postal Service made most of it's profit on postcards as they just had to deliver them, in bulk, to the boats that went to either Ireland or the UK.

    Is there a standard international rate that all countries have to abide by?

    The Treaty of Bern (1874) established the Universal Postal Union which covers things like this.

    And they are bringing changes in that will diminish the advantages of Chinese e-commerce retailers in providing very cheap postage
