I guess they do sound kind of alike.

So was thinking about how the summer is going and just an overview for myself.

Additions: Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Daniel James
Possible further purchases: Longstaff, Ben Yedder, Bruno Fernandes

Promoted players: Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes, Tuanzebe, Greenwood

Obviously other players linked but the possible ones seem most likely. Also what happens with departures could affect other signings.

If we got those three signed it would be great and a refreshing style to the window compared to recent times but you do feel we would do with another signing for a player than no questions asked will walk into the team and improve it.

Be interesting how it pans out. Side note, really hope Chong is given chances this season. An exciting prospect.

If we don’t sign a top quality centre back then we are fooked. Smalling is grand but at the highest level he’s not up to it. Phil Jones is a joke, permanently injured and when he’s not he is liable to do something mad. Rojo was good once and I love his attitude but he’s a lunatic who will cost you matches. Bailly is so inconsistent and there’s times he’s half asleep and can’t even kick a ball.

Lindelof is our only dependable centre back and to go into a season with only one centre back you can hang your hat on is a worry.

Luuk de Jong is in Seville to complete a move to Sevilla.

THe coversation is based on signing Ben Yedder, because people are saying we need a striker even if Lukaku stays, or we need ben yedder and another. So you should include him in this argument (or just keep lukaku in the argument.

Yes Sanchez and Martial will be competing on the left. But if Rashford is out injured then at least one of them could be played central (or both in a front 2). Greenwood would only be getting blooded, yes - but he only comes into this coversation when at least two from Rashford, Martial, Ben Yedder and Sanchez are injured (or rubbish).

First choice:

Martial---Rashford---Fernandes (? - in Mata/Lingard role) (Subs - Sanchez, Ben Yedder)

Rashford out:

Martial - Ben Yedder - Fernandes (Subs - Sanchez, James, Greenwood)

Rashford and Martial out:

Sanchez - Ben Yedder - Fernandes (Subs - Greenwood, James - arguable lingard, mata as number 10 shadow forward subs)

Sanchez, Rashford, Martial out:

James, Ben Yedder - Fernandes.

If Fernandes isn't signed then we need to sign some other player for that spot - but imo that spot ISN'T a striker, so it isn't part of the striker argument, it is part of a different arguement and requirement.

basically, I don't see where a second striker signing would fit (or be absolutely needed) if Lukaku goes and is replaced. Sure, you can make an argument but that argument basically amounts to 'we can always use more players!'. If Lukaku stays I see zero argument for signing another stiker. Sure there are better strikers around than we have but i just can't see how people could think or expect the club that will likely play one up front spend HUGE money on another striker to go into the season with Rashford, Lukaku, Striker, Martial, Sanchez, Greenwood all capable, to some degree, of playing through the middle.

Need to take into account budget, game time, planned/expected/hoped performances and also a medium/long term plan.

IMO - Right Wing or the Lingard/Mata first team spot is way more important to do something about than striker.

I wouldnt hold my breath either on Fernandes taking Mata/Lingards spot. I'm open to correction but is Fernandes not more likely to be part of the midfield 3 with Pog and Matic? If we sign Fernandes, I just can't see him in a midfield 3 with pogba and Matic - i don't think there is enough defensive work in that 3.

I could be wrong, but I would see him coming in to that Mata/Lingard spot which is basically a free role roaming from right side across the attacking third. That spot would fit the player I think he is, though I would really like an actual right winger for that spot to give us some real pace and width out and balance out an attack that sees a lot of players already pushing into that middle space.

Your correct that he is best in a 3 man midfield with two hard workers so he has the licence to roam forward centrally , he has a bit of a Lampard about him ,

I completely disagree that an effective free role as an attacking midfielder would be a 'total waste' of a player you say thrives on being given licence to roam.

I get what your saying but Fernandes best asset is arriving into space not starting in the space if you get me , like Lampard ,

Starting from a wide position and drifting in I don't think would suit him at all , that suits a Mata, Ozil type player more, Fernandes is more of CM midfielder than them ,

Also the right back you just signed is a fantastic defender but may not be suited to bombing forward down the right, Well not just yet he could become that player in the future,

Firmino's pay is apparently heavily incentivised too and his basic pay is relatively low.....relatively. I could see clubs trying to push this where they can.
