(same goes for Mignolet with Alisson - while he's publicly been a very good team player, I presume he's considering his options as his international career is under threat if he stays as a back up) - but finding a replacement player to come in won't necessarily be the easiest thing to do.

Wouldn't it just be Klopp's style though to not get a replacement, and give Kelleher the back up spot? He's spoken highly of him already so why not promote from within.

I'd agree with Mig being concerned for his International career, especially with this 'golden' generation of Belgian players. It's not beyond the realms of belief that they could win something in the next 5-7 years, so any player would want to be part of that squad.

What kind of role do people see OX playing next season?

It's a cliche but he is very much "like a new signing" for next season.

I'm wondering if he might end up playing quite a few games at right-back next season? More and more this role is less about being a traditional full-back it's basically covering the entire side of the field. Ox has the natural engine and instinct to get forward and overlap to do this really well. TAA is obviously first choice but only started 28 league games last season - I do think we need backup there and Gomez for me is not the man do it (fantastic CB but not a natural attacking full back imo).

Midfield is crowded so I could see him being used here as first backup in important games should TAA need to be rested. Play Hoover in the League Cup and give Ox a chance in midfield maybe in these games.

That said, if Keita fails to impress again then Ox could have a great chance at nailing down a spot as a dynamic forward thinking centre-mid. I do have hopes however that Keita will get closer to his full potential next season - there was the beginning of some promising signs towards the end of last season - and that Keita is above Ox in the pecking order.

I would also have Shaq ahead of Ox as first up for cover of the front 3, just think he's smarter and more comfortable in tight spaces, Ox being more suited as a wide winger in a traditional system (i.e. more like our fullbacks) rather than an inside creative forward who needs to play quick and have good finishing also. There may also be a signing made here.

He'll be a very useful player to have anyway, lots of versatility. I'm sure he'll get a decent chunk of games.

Who's Migs competition for the bench with Belgium?

Reina was great when he was at his peak for us but always behind Casillas and Valdes.

Didn't stop him going crazy winning the Euros and the World Cup!! :pac:

someone who plays week in week out for their club I'd guess.

And I always thought Reina was ahead of Valdes in the pecking order? he even played dead rubber group games at tournaments (Euro 2012?)

Well, I was actually saying that it wouldn't be easy to find a replacement for Lovren, not Mignolet. International standard defender, etc...

Migs would be quite easy to replace - back up keeper, likely English... Alex McCarthy. Job done. I think moving Kelleher into that position is a recipe for disaster. We'd all love him to be the next big thing but he's very young. If Alisson was out for a few league games, imagine the reaction if we had a teenager in goal? Meltdown situation... People freaked here when Clyne wasn't replaced last January. It would be on another level if it was the goalkeeper that we were talking about.

Mignolet and Martinez have both previously spoken out about his role in the Liverpool side. I know Migs was a lot more positive about being #2 to Alisson but surely he wants to play a bit more than he currently is. I could see someone like Palace, Villa, etc seeing him as a decent option.

There isn't many other options to back up Courtois at Belgium - Selz, Casteels and someone named Van Crombrugge - so Migs might not be in trouble but he definitely won't stand a chance of ousting Courtois if he never plays himself.

I'm a big fan of Ox but these types of injuries can take an awful lot of time to recover from. I reckon, sadly, that we won't see him regularly near the team until Christmas or later.

If he is in the side, #10 role seems the best fit for him. I like him as a winger but we haven't seen him there much for Liverpool and while I agree with the full back sentiments, I just don't see it happening as playing in an advanced role was a large part of why we signed him ahead of Chelsea, who wanted him to replace Moses as RWB.

I've posted a few times before about my dislike of Lovern playing as first choice.

However, as third or fourth choice i think he's an excellent option so I'd like to keep hold, especially if he's valued at circa £20m (which i think is a little on the low side.)

If goes to show just how good VVD is that whatever centre-back partner is put beside him, they look impervious.

Ideally I'd love another colossus to slot in beside VVD, however the forward line needs competition and full back cover is required first and foremost.

I can't see Ox playing anywhere but midfield. Maybe if we're stuck he can play FB, but Klopp's midfield selections last year were shackled by what he had available so I think we're going to see a lot less of the Hendo/Milner/Wini starting 3 combo.

Ox is still very much in recovery mode but in time I expect him to be a regular starter. I think he may be used more advanced as well as part of rotating the front 3 if needs be.

There's a lot of options there in midfield but they can all be accommodated bar one or two on the periphery such as Lallana.

The season should be very interesting to watch unfold in regards to Ox and Keita in particular.

    Either of these:

Matz Sels - he used to play for Anderlecht but moved to a French club last year.

    Koen Casteels plays for Wolfsburg.

I don't see Ox back up and fully match fit till Christmas/New Year I would bring him back into the team slowly and integrate like he was a new signing.

Different reports on Alex McCarthy who would be a decent back up keeper but the Echo reporting the club aren't interested.

Liverpool transfer stance on Alex McCarthy and Dorukhan Tokoz confirmed
Liverpool will not be making a move for either Alex McCarthy or Dorukhan Tokoz – both of whom have been reported as being potential transfer targets for Jurgen Klopp this week.

The Reds could be in the market for an understudy goalkeeper for Alisson if former number one Simon Mignolet departs Anfield this summer and Southampton player McCarthy, 29, offers Premier League experience.

Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was an admirer of the Guildford-born custodian who has been capped once by England in the second half of a 3-0 friendly win over USA in November 2018 but the ECHO understands his name has not been discussed by the current management team.

Tokoz, 23, is a defensive midfielder from Besiktas who can also operate at right-back.

He broke into the Turkish national team earlier this year and has also been linked with a potential move to Italian club Udinese among others but the ECHO understands he is not even on Liverpool's radar

I think that Ox is nearly guaranteed to start our first couple of games next season - fitness permitting. The front 3 players, and Keita, won't be starting too many games at the start of the season so he will be filling in there.

We're just after coming off of a tough season in terms of the front players playing so much, and a World Cup summer, after a season where they had to play nearly all games. They'll be getting a break this summer for a few weeks and not rushed back.

Mane & Salah are both playing for the 2 favorites to win the AFCON so expect them to go deep into the tournament. Keita probably won't. The AFCON final takes place on July 19th (semi finals on July 14th). Firmino, and Alisson but not as much tiredness issues there is playing for the favourites of the Copa America. The Copa America final takes place a bit earlier on July 7th, with the semi finals on the 2nd & 3rd.

You would want to be giving the players around 3 weeks break after that. But our first pre season game takes place on July 11th - before the final of the AFCON and just after the final of the Copa America. if they players have a 3 week break, and then start back training on August 1st for their pre-season, they won't be having much time before we play City on the 4th of August in the charity shield, and then Norwich on the 9th of August. We will be doing well to have more than 1 of the front 3 players in that game IMO. And that is just the opener - we may see them rotate with 1 starting each game for a couple of weeks with Ox playing on the wings perhaps.

Nonsense, he will be fighting fit at the start of the season and he will be rearing to go. He's been fight since April and will get plenty of games in pre season.

He won't be anymore rusty or any less match fit the the rest of the players.
Also with the African and Brazil boys coming back late it's almost a dead cert he will start against Norwich

Unless Ox has a reaction during the pre-season I'm pretty sure he'll start from the start but he may be rotated quite a bit with Keita/Hendo depending on how Klopp sets up the midfield.

I was reading about that and the players Barca had to release. Probably better off leaving all those players to it and the litany of sharks they have representing them.

Looks like they will be off loading the last young bargain they got this summer..

Odegaard looks like he will be one of the players offloaded to bring in money.

Another Next Messi that hasn't lived up to the hype of being the Next Messi.

Liverpool and Chelsea have been given 5250k tickets each for the Super Cup final in a stadium that holds 41k supporters.

Sheyi Ojo (another one of my disappointing project players!) is expected off to Rangers for the season. He really needs to make this loan work he has oodles of innate talent but a bit of the "it'll do (shrugs)" about his work ethic.

    Done deal.

and they already have a song for him
Oh ee oh, super Sheyi Ojo, oh ee oh, he hates the ****in’ provos, oh ee oh, he hates the ****in’ IRA!

Will many travel I wonder for a glorified friendly?

Can't see tickets going for huge money. Imo Norwich tickets will be way more sought after.

That sounds like it might be an issue... even just the printing costs for 5 million tickets must be fairly high!

Wan Bissaka mentioned as a RB & play Trent in midfield should never be mentioned again. Awful idea.

Trent is a far better RB.

This Trent as a midfielder makes no sense to me. I think the only reason anyone has talked about it is because they're desperate for another Stevie G (who came through the teams as a RB too).

Trent has all the ingredients for a text book world class attacking FB, a position that was just as instrumental in winning games this season as CM.
