I have the R8000 about 3 years and paid £230 for it. I have 5 teenagers who all have games consoles, PCs, phones, tablets etc.
I couldn't recommend it enough and it has been worth every penny. VM connection and speed reliability helps but the Cisco modem and VM hub could never remotely compare to the R8000.
I use Netgear Genie and have about 22 devices connected at peak when everyone is home. Never a problem.

If I got this and set my VM router to bridge mode can I still connect wired devices through the rj45 ports or do I have to use the ports on the netgear router?

I have eir, and an eir router. Find it very poor. We jump provider annually, I presume this will work well with all providers and is reasonably easy to set up?

other than the combined speed of the netgear, is it any better than this Asus unit?

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-RT-AC86U-AiProtection-Accelerator-Aggregation/dp/B075WFL15D/ref=sr_1_4?crid=D3ER329DRLER&keywords=asus+rt-ac88u&qid=1559724140&s=gateway&sprefix=asus+rt%2Caps%2C167&sr=8-4

The netgear has a quite high percentage of bad reviews (then again same can be said for Asus unit I've linked)

Asus has excellent merlin-wrt fitmware. My vote goes to Asus.

It's Google - surprising they didn't cancel it before.

Sorry grogi is that an answer or a comment ?

I’m merely asking if anybody has used this router with the Virgin Hub and how they found it

    Not used the Nighthawk.
But I have used Asus AC-87u and 86u with the VM hub in bridge mode.

On any of the Nighthawk/Asus models the ability to have multiple SSID is a great plus.
I have 2 5ghz and 3 2.4ghz running and it leaves my network management a lot easier.

That's before the hugely improved WiFi and network performance is taken into consideration.

Answer. Don't touch, bar Gmail (they simply cannot afford to ditch it), anything that Google does. They have awesomely consistent record of dropping any support for anything they suddenly loose interest.

I just got the ASUS one instead on HUKD as people seemed to prefer that to the netgear. I've set it up the other day and you have to use the ports on the netgear router.

You can assign IP ranges for this to dynamically assign to devices on its ethernet ports- allowing you to continue to use the ports on your modem (for example if you have an IP phone- it tends to throw a hissy fit if you send it over the bridge- I've a Cisco 7911- and it simply won't connect over the bridge.

It does take a small amount of pretty basic configuration work- but its not difficult.

Hmm.. I did not know this.

Does that mean they would be behind the firewall, just like it was a switch inside your network?

Got any links on how to do it? It would allow me to decommission a piece of crap switch behind the TV (yay!)

I got it through trial and error in the settings- I didn't use a Youtube video or a tutorial.

You are 100% it's behind the firewall?

folks got this today just have one question when connecting devices to netgear do i reconnect from my current provider and hit the Netgear wifi symbol on all my devices including security cameras ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,200 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

I ended up getting one of these and going to set it up tomorrow. Possibly a stupid question but can I set the netgear router name and password the same as my VM hub so I don't have to go about reconnecting all my devices

I've an asus ac66u. The WiFi has been acting up for a while now. 5ghz randomly disappearing and the only way to get it back is full reset or unplug it for 30 mins. Not ideal.

I tried the r7000 but it would randomly stop letting anyone connect to it, while at the same time I couldn't connect via a web browser. Only way to bring it back was a power cycle.

So I'm wondering if the r8000 could be a replacement? Thoughts given my last two routes as above?

That's what I did and it worked. Just make sure you set the VM hub to bridge mode before changing the name.

Yes. And set up IP addresses the same

I'm not finding any sign of bridge/modem mode in the VM Hub settings? I found this post and followed the steps of resetting the modem but still no sign. Any ideas?

EDIT: NVM I see I need to ring Virgin and have them disable IPV6 and then do the reset again

You will need to ask VM to give you IPv4, you're probably defaulted to IPv6 range.

Give the mods on the VM "talk to forum" a PM and they'll sort you out. Once they have made the change to your account, reset the hub and you should see modem/bridge mode.

How many googlebytes does this modem have? Will it stream movies on my TV or do I have to upload a server?

    Get a better power supply.

Two separate manufacturers and the same issue? I didn't think the power adapter that came with it could be the problem but I'll investigate thanks. Would you have any links to get me started?

Get a better power supply. Power brick getting out of spec is cause of majority issues.
