Release bearing or flywheel

    My Golf mk7 clutch has a little rattle at idle for about 2 years now. 2 different main dealers told me it was a release bearing and no point changing until change the clutch. I recently went to trade it in to an indep garage and salesman and his mechanic told me it was intact the flywheel. How much are both jobs. My understanding is the flywheel and clutch are separate jobs so I wouldn't be wanting to spend big money on either for it to be wrong issue. Could be time to offload her

    A lot of the diesel Mk7's have a solid flywheel from the factory, I'd say the dealer was more likely to know that than the independent. Could be either or, but if the symptoms are progressed it should be easy tell one noise from the other. If it does have a dual mass flywheel, it's good practise to replace the clutch at the same time. If it has a solid flywheel, there's generally no need to replace them.

    If it's been rattling for two years and hasn't gotten any worse, it'd be inclined to think it's the release bearing and wouldnt be putting too much pass on it, particularly if trading in. Unless is hanging out of it/ rattling its nuts off.

    Probably €5-600 independent for a good brand clutch kit supplied and fitted and closer to €1k if it needs a new flywheel too.

    Thanks haven't noticed any worsening of it but obviously a future buyer might. Either way since donedeal is a waste of time and I'm selling to a garage I won't be worrying if they don't notice it. Got quoted 1250 inc vat for flywheel clutch and release bearing and labour. And this was a real back street garage I used as a benchmark
