I'm looking at purchasing one of these in the UK in the next few months.
£20,000 seems to be able to get a nice specced model with low ish mileage. DSG etc

I only have a 10km commute to work and I want something fun and powerful.
The Mark 8 version is just coming out I believe so Prices might fall a bit more?

Has anyone any experience of a mark 7 ownership? Has it been a success?

Is there anything else I should be considering for the same Money given the circumstances.
    Thanks

There are a few R owners on here, we've mostly posted our experiences on the MK7 GTI/GTD/R thread, they are a great car to daily especially if you go for a decent spec DSG, ACC etc.

    thread here: https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057328552

You will of course be paying VRT on top of that 20k so factor that in. For my money i favour the 7 over the 7.5.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. When did the 7.5 come out?
I saw that thread alright but there is limited R related messages.

all golfs were updated to 7.5 midway through 171 plate, so most of them will be 172+

Its a big thread with a lot to skip through alright, how much homework have you done on running costs etc ?

What kind of mileage examples are you looking at ?

7.5 is out since about May 2017. Cost aside, I’d pick the newer car, bit of a no brainer really if budget allows.

There is loads of R related information in that larger GTI/R thread. You really should read through it and ask questions in there.

MK8 performance models probably won’t appear for at least another year.

Residuals on them all are poor enough in the first 2-3 years, like any new car, the first owner takes a massive hit. But once they are 3 years old the depreciation really levels off. E.g. good 152 / 161 R’s would still be selling for 30k or more.

I'd consider most up to 50,000 max miles. Would prefer closer to 20,000.

For the approximate €30,000 cost. Is there any other cars I should be considering?

I previously owned a 428i, 245 bhp 4 series BMW coupe and would like a little more power.
I drove an R and heard lots of positive information so it's my number one choice.

Buy the R, they are amazing cars.
If you are are buying in the Uk be careful if specs as the UK cars only come with 18” Cadiz wheels as standard and they look awful on the car.

Cadiz were standard here too but Pretorias were a very low cost upgrade so are more popular over here, the flip side is though most examples over here seem to be manual and 5 door.

The Cadiz are 19's as standard here though, so they do look a good bit better. The Prets are only a 130 quid-ish factory option here too, whereas they're nearly 1k to spec in the UK.

Watch out for UK "Lease spec". They'll all be standard cars 5 door cars on 18" cadiz in one of the free colours (white/red).

I'd say the vast majority sold here have been DSG, no? Trawl through carzone and nearly all of them are DSG. And yes, vast majority are 5 door, both here and UK.
