If it's anything like the new Toerag interior the instrument cluster will carry virtually seamlessly into the center infotainment screen.

The shape of the dash, positioning of the air vents etc is very similar to the current Polo, with two long slim vents below the infotainment screen.

Do any of the VAG newer infotainment systems come with gesture control similar to BMW? I know it's bit of a gimmick but it might cut down on the finger prints.

From what I can see the gesture control just allows fairly simple commands like turning volume up/down, clicking next...all of which are available on the steering controls of most VAGs anyway?

Yeah if you get the "Pro" version of the Discovery system it has gestures.

My 172 Skoda VRs has gesture control, handy if you want it to change radio station every time you change gear.

Also voice-lack-of-recognition, which is useless at everything.

Both can fortunately be turned off.

Do you have that in your 5 Series?

First new model 5 Series I drove had gesture control and I found it excellent for putting the volume to either full blast ear bleed maximum, or total silence. Piss poor for anything in between that though.

The voice controls on cars are generally pretty poor. But at least in the MK7 if you have App Connect you can long press the voice control button and use Googles voice control, which is pretty decent.

That said, I had voice control on a 2011 mk3 Ford Focus a few years ago and used it all the time, mainly because the infotainment system was so hard to navigate. It worked once you knew how to talk to it right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,902 ✭✭✭hooch-85

I had it in my old Fiesta ST as well, I used it mostly for reading out funny text messages and words it couldn't pronounce, my son and niece used get a right skit out of it:D

FWIW i think the infortainment system in the mk7 is plenty good enough. As mentioned above most of the controls are on the steering wheel and in the MFD in the clock cluster.

Nope, nothing that fancy in the F10. That was only introduced in the newer G30 5 Series.

That sketch looks like it would be far better in person. Like Joe said, the sketch looks almost identical to the new BMW interiors such the the new 3 Series/Z4/8 Series.

Mrs and I have both bmw and VW systems. Leaving aside which one is better or not, we both think the golf touchscreen is set too low and a distraction. the iDrive screen is directly in line of sight for normal driving. It’s most apparent using both back to back daily.
Moving it up would be an improvement.

Has anyone had a problem where the edges of the screen for CarPlay are cut off?

Pretty cool stealth gauge install. Don't know if it's worth €300 though...

That price is for the basic cheaper version too, it's more for the track pack and analog boost sensor with all the interesting readouts. That runs closer to €600.

I'll get a P3 gauge at some point, but I'll wait for a Black Friday offer and for when I'm ready to start messing with the vacuum hose install to make it fully worthwhile.

Has anyone replaced the footwell LEDs? I know I can get a kit from deautoled in the US, but shipping to Ireland is 16 quid on top of the 50 dollar price so surely there's a place to get a kit from Europe or a Chinese option?

If not I'll just bite the bullet and go for them, but just wondering is there anywhere else people have found them.

    deautokey.com/product/mk7-gti-remote-control-color-changing-footwell-leds

I'll probably leave them as red 95% of the time to match the door strips and stitching, but if I'm going to bother changing them why not go for the colour changing option :)

Considering collecting a 2014 GTD from Carshop in Norwich at the weekend. It is the one with 89k.

Any watch-outs, feedback or flags, would be really appreciated.

I cant post link as a newbie - but easy to find.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,036 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Ger them to send you proper pictures of the bodywork they've put a filter or something on it so very difficult to see it, I think I can see scratches on 3 panels.
Other than that it's a nice spec and you'll save a few thousand.

Nice spec on it. I'm pretty sure you won't be able to get Android Auto on that head unit since it's MIB1, just something to think about. That and keyless entry are the only things I'd want on top of what's already there (well, and a petrol engine.. :D)

Apart from that, I'd definitely be getting better pictures, they shouldn't be allowed doctor the photos like they have, their cars all look way too glossy.

Consider getting the AA/RAC car check thing done before you go. They apparently do a great job of checking the car out for you before you travel.

Link for anyone else who wants a look - https://www.carshop.co.uk/used-car/VOLKSWAGEN/GOLF/YF64BCE

Edit - Go back to post 6531 for some tips on what to look out for, Toyotafan also had a great post, #6538 that gives a good primer on what to look out for when buying a MK7.

My reversing camera in the rear VW badge embelm is stuck. Anyone know how to fix it?

If you go into reverse are you getting video from the camera on the dash? If so, gently but a little forcefully pull the badge upwards as if you are opening the boot and at the same time gently try to push the camera back up into the badge, you might need to do a bit of wiggling of the badge and camera to find the sweet spot where it will all go back.

If you have no camera view on the dash, take the battery off for around 15 minutes. Put the battery back on, your dash will be like a Christmas tree, but the faults will clear after driving and turning the steering wheel full lock left to right. Select reverse again then first gear and if the camera still doesn't move then you're in trouble. You do see some that just die and you'll get an open circuit of no communication fault stored, in which case you'll need a camera/ badge unit.

Sounds promising, the camera is telescopic and when the badge is fully upright the camera extends outwards. If the camera gets stuck in its outward position it will stop the badge from dropping down closed again.

Only got a chance to reply now. I managed to fix it this morning. It just took a bit of extra force and jiggling than that I was previously applying. All working now okay.

It got stuck in the first place when a friend I was picking up tried to open the boot when I had reverse selected.

Thanks Toyotafanboi for the quick reply and good advice :)

Sorry if wrong place, but would value Golf owner input. I'm getting a vibration sound / noise into the cabin while the car is stationary (and also moving). Seems to match engine rev's... its really starting to annoy me. Its been there a while, but definitely getting worse. VW said they couldnt hear it (a few months back).

I'm stationary here, and its very noticable from around 10 seconds in... Any ideas what it might be or an indy who could investigate it further?

I've pushed and pulled every piece of plastic and door panel that I can see/find....

    Muppet Man

So even after coding out the artificial soundaktor in my R this really annoying rattle persisted.... however...

Today - with the sun in my face I pulled down the driver side sun visor and the rattle magically stopped. When I closed the visor it started again... finally found the source of the problem after nearly 2 years of pushing & pulling evey bit of plastic in the cabin.... Jaysis, it was like an itch I couldnt scratch. 100% confirmed to be the sun visor - hard to believe it made so much noise.

Had the exact same issue with my last GTi. Got to the point where I had to ball up some tissue and insert it between the vanity mirror housing and the light. Stopped it, however everything somebody would use the visor, out dropped the tissue. Anyway a zero cost solution (in part)...

I think i noted this on this tread a few years ago...

I thought I had a buzz / vibration coming from the sun visor in the R one morning. So I gave it a good firm main-dealer-style fist thump. Cracked the vanity mirror glass!

And I didn’t fix the buzz!

Currently doing 35k km per year and looking for a change. My preference is a GTI but my head is saying the GTD is the more sensible option. Trying to figure out the man maths to make a GTI work. Any help appreciated!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,902 ✭✭✭hooch-85

I do 30k a year and went GTD, would still love a GTi but it's costing me a fair bit less to run the GTD. I average around 45 mpg and i'm filling the tank 2 to 3 times a month. If my mileage was half that i'd have gone GTi for sure.

They seem to be holding value a lot better than GTD's too, what I've saved on fuel I've lost in depreciation easily so really it's all relative.

That’s one of the ways I’m trying to justify it. I think I could live with extra fuel costs up to maybe €1500/year but after that I’m not sure it’s worth it.
