Getting into a deadlocked car...

    Any ideas?

Locked the keys in a Mk1 TT this evening (in the boot). Tried the coat hanger trick and got the inside handle pulled but the door still wouldn't budge after multiple tries.

Am I gonna need to break glass?

Go down to the local chipper and ask a few of the scobies there, they'll be in in no time.

Failing that, ring a locksmiths. Probably cost 150, but it's a small price to pay not to be in debt to said scobies.

Probably easiest cheapest to break the glass but can you access the boot from the inside?

Can you hit the central locking button with the coat hanger?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,092 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

Doors are locked too, so no access to anywhere

If I can get in the door there is an emergency boot release under the centre console..but thats a big if :(

    Don’t the rear seats fold?

The central locking button is under the climate control vents, in front of the gearstick but also under a closed cover..so on chance of getting at it really

If you break a tail light, can you get access to get your arm in to grab tbe keys?

These might seem silly suggestions but you'd be very surprised.

    Is it locked?
    And
    Have you a spare key?

It is locked, and no spare key :(

You need a door wedge. The little rubber kind you use to stopper the door.

    And then a coat hanger.

    This is easy. Super easy.

If the car is deadlocked though, would that still work?

Ooh, looks like the post I’m replying to re manual boot open has been deleted.

I did that, and pulled the handle from the inside but still got nothing - I'm 99% sure its deadlocked

Locksmith. They will get in without causing any damage.

    Smash window.

    Or

Take the reg plate of angle grind out a slot big enough for an arm. This method will need a welder and some soon afterwards. Replace reg plate.

So did the brother lock the car, then open boot via the remote with car still locked, open boot, leave keys in, close boot?

Will car let you do that with deadlock activated?

Get a blank key blade cut and manually unlock?

    Correct Colm

Blank keys and lock smiths are all well and good, but I might just break a window and buy a new one for €50. I'm meeting a chap tomorrow with a breaker for a few other bits anyway

Is this outside your house? This happened to us and we broke a small window. It was covered by the insurance with no impact on our claims, most policies have this, read the small print. A contractor came out and replaced the window and hoovered out the car! No questioned asked.

They will ask you over the phone what caused the broken window, just say vandalism then say unfortunately.
As above ,glass insurance has no effect on your cover

I'd try getting a strong bar past the window to slide back the cover of boot lock switch on centre console and then press the button. A slim strong bar would do it, not a clothes hanger.

The car is deadlocked, as you say. Pressing the boot unlock button on the dash or trying the door handles from the inside wont work.

There is a completely manual boot release in the mk1 TT at the back of the centre console under a small flap, just pull it and it'll open even with the dead locking active afaik as it's there to prevent you being locked out of the boot encase of flat battery.

I'm not 100%, but if the rear quarter windows are just mounted by the rubber seal on these, you could pop a rear quarter window out, fish the cover off with with a rod and pull the manual release.

A bit of pricking around but probably the only damage free way in, bar buying a new key or getting a locksmith.

They didn't ask anything. They just sent someone over to fix it and hoover up the damage. I broke the window with a hammer. No questioned asked.

It would be an absolute nightmare getting that cover off, you’d have the seat in the way but with the window out I might be able to tilt the seat forward

I can’t remember but I’m 99% sure the back seats only fold from the latches in the boot which is a pity because you could probably get at the latches if they were on the top of the seat with the window removed

    Will update tomorrow!
