VW Golf boot not opening

2013 Golf passed NCT Monday and boot not opening all of a sudden. You get the click/sound when you pull handle but wont open. Is there a manual way to do it? BTW not my car, know nothing about them.

Yes, you can open it from the inside, if you climb through to the boot there should be a small removable flap/cover.
Under this should give access to the cable.
Your problem is possibly a frayed wire, perhaps inside the rubber sleeve to the top of the boot, visible when it's open.
