I test drove a couple. Engaging drive, very comfortable, really wanted one. I did find them to be somewhat noisy at motorway speeds, though - just a general wind/road noise hum, so maybe check that out for yourself.

There was a thing about some of the diesels consuming oil, which was A Bad Thing. This might have stopped by 2015.

Do you have any evidence for this?

I had a 152 Mazda 6. I had it serviced on time, every time. At 100500km both rear brake callipers seized and had to be replaced. I got rid of it, but before the dealer managed to sell it the engine suffered serious damage due to a well known issue of oil flowing back into the turbo.

My brother in law has one and has also had to replace all the brake callipers.

Another friend has a mazda3 with the same engine, but hasn’t had any problems.

Maybe I got a ‘Friday evening’ car, but my experience with the car, and the treatment from both Mazda Ireland and the dealer in Galway would definitly put me off buying any Mazda again.

Wow that sucks, especially for a 152.

That was something Mazda tried to address in facelift models, though I'm not sure how much they actually improved it.

Haven't personally heard or read of any horror stories about the diesel engines in the newer 6.

I had heard the 2.2 diesel engines on early 08-12 models were not good but wasnt sure of anything above that.

If you really need a diesel, I'd look far away from Mazda. If you must have a Mazda 6, get petrol.
