Google mini and Echo dot are both £30 now. I was in the market for an internet radio for the kitchen. No interest in smart features, literally just wifi radio stations. . .possibly spotify but not really used at present (I had been waiting for the Roberts R1 to drop in price again but it's not budging).

Which of the two would be better for sound? Any alternatives of a similar price?

You can link them up to a Bluetooth speaker also.

The Alexa has been upgraded and has a all round speaker compared with previous models.

Alexa is good for an internet radio and spotify IMO

Its got the added benefit of being able to set a timer (if your cooking) and other smart features. Even if you dont want smart features, the times is very handy!

Google mini reduced in Currys for 35€. Which works out slightly better than the UK store when you take into account postage fees and conversion rates.

Thinking of getting the home mini. Any idea if/when Google might issue a refreshed version?

Great deal on the Harmony Elite

Has anyone every gotten one of these to work with a Shield? Mrs. Clareman is stuggling to use the shield and I'm thinking this could make things a lot easier.

Google might suddenly stop selling the current one instead of releasing a new one.

Yep, works great with the Shield. I couldn't live without it.

My Harmony One (IR based older version) worked out of the box with some dodgy cheap Chinese optical switch that I have, I'd have complete confidence it'll work with the Shield.

Very handy devices, a nice change to having 6 bloody remotes about the room. The biggest (unintentional) bonus is that we use the Xbox for NowTV and DVD/BR player, now MrsTeal doesn't need to touch the Xbox controller, the Harmony does it all.

Ahh the new 1 doesn't have IR, flicking from Sat to Saorview to Shield to Netflix is 1 of her biggest annoyances (after me of course)

The 2017 Shield uses Bluetooth controllers, you need the Harmony Hub with the 2017 Shield which the Harmony Elite comes with. Your IR only version would not work though unless you add a hub

I should have mentioned that it's the TV I'd need to be changing, it's a regular smart TV.

Yep, Just add it as a device on the Harmony and create different activities, Watch TV, Watch Shield and the Harmony will change inputs and control what you want based on the activity you selected

I think they're £29 everywhere at the moment. I think I'll go for the Echo dot. A quick look about online suggests it has better sound, that'll pretty much clinch it for me.

Was reading all the bad reviews, trying to convince myself to try it anyways, the clock ticked past midnight and daily deal gone! Saved! (Until the next sale :D )

I was looking at the Yale Conexis too. I was tempted but when it goes wrong it really goes wrong.

    Absolutely not worth it.

Something like Nuki is an alternative, and you can still get in with a key if needed.

I've been e-mailed that IFTTT support for Anymote smart app/device is ending, and also that stringify app is ceasing operations, so any Smart-i-pants here who engage with these apps will need alternative methods. Just saying.

Nuki looks interesting, it says on its website it works with a multipoint lock, be interesting to see if it actually had the power required to open/close a multipoint.
