I'll be the first to admit I know know nothing about these but have always liked them. I'm currently in the market for a new car and see this. Could I get some opinions on what people think of this? Am I asking for trouble, and will it cost a fortune on maintenance?

Do you need a diesel ? Have it checked out by Gary Doyle in Chelmsford motors or Bloomfield motors if you decide you would like it ...

Tax and insurance will be the biggest problem

Thanks, both I'm fine with. It's the maintenance I don't want to worry about.

I've just moved on from the e60. I had a 2006 523i sport a bit like that one but petrol obviously. My mileage was slightly lower than that but it was starting to cause problems and I'd had it 3 years so moved it on. I didn't get anything like 3400 euro for it so even allowing for the fact its diesel and mine was petrol, that car is asking twice as much money as it should.
But I'd recommend the e60 alright, enjoyed my time with it. You'll have to be EXTREMELY lucky to put up decent mileage in it now without incurring additional costs.

    Thanks Johnny, that's great advice.

Keep in mind it's a 14 year old car so stuff does break, fail and wear out. It might only be a 3.4k car now but it can still be an expensive car to repair. The E60 had a good bit of tech in it for the time so make sure there are no mysterious warning lights staying on the dashboard. The iDrive infotainment system can be iffy on them, usually a black screen of death. ABS/traction control units can fail too though these can be reconditioned. Check the boot well too for water as get in there, frayed wiring going to the boot is also another common problem with them. Engine is fairly reliable (no timing chain issues) and well capable of high mileage once the swirl flaps were removed (mentioned in the advert) and turbo breather filter is changed regularly.

Ive had loads of these types of car, the "gamble" isnt that much of a gamble on them, when you know a lad who will do the work for a pittance if things go wrong, I can pass the mechanics details on if you like Op. They are a ridiculous amount of car for that money. Thats also the more reliable engine, than the 07+ one. Just have any of them checked out prior to purchase. The fact that he already has a new car, will probably mean he is more eager to sell...
