Steps after being charged

    Hi, long story short I've been charged with an offence but I've never been in trouble before so i don't even know what happens next. Do i get a letter giving me a court date? How long before said date will i receive notice? Haven't really the means for a solicitor so again no idea what to do or how to go about it. I'm not looking for legal advice just to familiarize myself with procedure etc.

    You should receive a summons giving you a court date, a copy of the charge sheet. This should be sent to the address you gave to the gardaí.

    Depending on the charge it may be fully dealt with on the day or you may need to return to court one or more times before it is finalised.

    It might be worth contacting your local citizens information centre or free legal advice clinic who should be able to give you more detailed advice depending on the specifics of your situation.

    Depending on your financial means and the nature of the charge you may qualify for legal aid. Citizens Information Centre or Free Legal Advice Clinic should be able to advise you.

    Get a solicitor.

    If you dont have money then they can apply for legal aid to get paid.

    Were you arrested and brought to a Garda Station? If 'yes', were you formally charged (a Garda read out the charge to you, cautioned you that you were not obliged to say anything etc etc. and invited you to reply) and given a copy of the charge? When you were being released, did anyone mention that you had to appear in court on a specific date?

    If you were not arrested, did a Garda take your name on the street and advise you that you would be charged with an offence? If so, you wait for a summons.
