I use TickTick for reminders. It's €3 subscription a month for full features but I think it's worth it (yes of course I'd prefer if it was a once off payment). :)

Try the free version for a while...

I just moved to TickTick but I don't need the paid for features. It has some nice, very customisable widgets. I have also added DigiCal calendar - easily the nicest widget & totally customisable.

I quite like Any.Do. Nice layout and interface but there is one or two quirks I don't like.

    Might give TickTick a look

Microsoft have one also, though I never used it much to see if it's any good.

    Free though.

I used Any.Do for years. Some time late last year I started getting warnings on my phone that it was using excessive battery, so that's why I moved.

It feels a little buggy alright. The "Plan your Day" thing is nice but I've definitely missed reminders because of it.

Contacts+ is one that's popular and has been around ages too. If the Google one above works though I'd definitely recommend that too.

I've used Contacts+ based on your recommendation here and I like it except for the pop-up I get after I finish a call (asking to send details). Is there a way to stop them that I'm just not able to see in the settings?

Moving back to Gmail from inbox. Really liked inbox for it's no nonsense simplicity.

Ads in Gmail are irritating, is there any way to completely remove them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,665 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Nope. Get used to swiping them. :(

Where are they, or are they a new thing? Never seen one on desktop or mobile.

    There's ads in Gmail?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,665 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Just one at the top of the promotions tab, disguised as an email (you can swipe to get rid of it).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,012 ✭✭✭✭GBX

Im the same. Really liked Inbox. They havent implemented enough of the stuff that Inbox had into Gmail for me to be fully convinced to like it but havent found anything similar.

    Yeah Im seeing ads too.

Fair enough, don't think I've ever been in there :D

I can't see any in mine. The YouTube premium/music subscription hardly covers it does it?

Though the first thing I've always done is to get rid of those tabs and just have an inbox with Starred and Everything Else, so maybe it doesn't when there's none.

I've been battling with the move back to Gmail the last week and I've come to the realisation that I need to abandon Google reminders altogether. They're such a mess now that Inbox is gone.

I'm still bitter that Google tricked me into moving to a workflow where Emails, Reminders and Reading List entries all lived together in perfect harmony and then they took it away from me.

For those who use Tick Tick, could someone explain to me what the following means when comparing the free and premium versions?

    Reminder Count
    Free - 2 per task
    Premium - 5 per task

Is it related to the amount of times you can snooze a task? Or you can set more than one reminder for a task?

Also, is it that you only get ads in Gmail if you use Tabbed Inbox rather than Default or Priority?

I'm getting them anyway. I actually didn't realise they could be dismissed.

More than one reminder per task. Can't say it's a feature I've used very often.
It's just as easy to set one date/time and snooze a task when it pops up.

That's good to hear. I'd have no reason to do have 5 different reminders but I guess it makes sense when you are going beyond a todo list and into full on diary/calendar/project management software territory which the premium versions seems to offer.

Im after an app that lights up the screen and allows me to see the notification when it arrives in to the phone,

currently have to pick up the phone - unlock it and swipe down to see them,

or is this just a xiaomi thing?

Definitely not just Xiaomi. Its on the Nokia 7 plus - could be there since android 8 - Now on 9 (Pie). What phone / Android version have you got?

@dball Try googling Xiaomi Ambient Display and how to enable it on your device. It is builtin and active on most custom roms. <<<< Don't get confused with always on display.

Your device on Android 0ne has ambient display feature, try enabling it?

Love the sound of Daywise but it looks like it's not available here.
Daywise serves as a notification scheduler so that you can easily get your work done without constant interruptions. Our increasingly connected world brings a few downsides along with it, and as you can imagine constant interruptions are very distracting when you're trying to get your work done. With Daywise you can easily blacklist notifications from any app you find disruptive, while also retaining the ability to whitelist the apps you'd never want to miss a notification from.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,390 ✭✭✭corkie

@Mr E Just looks like it has not been release properly yet?

    You could sideload it?

    https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/synapse-inc/daywise-schedule-notifications-do-not-disturb/

    Edit: -
The app is free to download, though we noticed the privacy policy mentioning that customers in the EU aren't supposed to be using it — likely because of the GDPR.

Edit 2: - But given the amount of stuff your sharing, you probably wouldn't want to use it anyway?
