Rear calipers are a big problem on them (and the whole Mk5 and 6 platform) rear suspension bolts seizing in the arms etc but nothing too bad

Engine wise they offered a 1.9 and 2.0, some 1.9 were badged as a 2.0 weirdly so watch what you get!
The 1.9 of that era would be all bxe which like to randomly throw Conrods through the block and are best avoided. Find a nice 2.0 if you can they are a better more refined engine although also not without their troubles

Dual mass flywheels on both varies were an issue from 80k + miles although that could be said of most diesels

Ive a 2008 Audi A3 1.9tdi (cant remember which engine but definitely not BXE).

Have it almost a year now and has been going great. Miser on fuel and is comfortable enough. Have clocked up just over 20k miles over the last 12 months and all i have spent on it has been getting the timing belt replaced, one service, and had to sort out rear calipers (as mentioned above).

As far as i know, they stopped the 1.9TDI’s sometime in 2009 and replaced them with the 1.6TDI engine. 2.0TDI was still available.

thanks for that..so the 09 ,1.9 diesels have the bxe engine and best avoided
