Ok, looking for a new car, went to garage yesterday because it had loads of different cars. No idea really what to get but I want something big.

Anyway took a test drive in a 520D, 2016. It was lovely. Cream leather and a nice few gadgets.

I rang a mate and he said not to go near as they can be dodgy and also expensive to repair. Now it seemed to me like bar stool talk but just said I would checkpoint here.

I would prefer to stay away from cream leather, he had a M3 for similar money so not sure what would be better?

Probably a better question as I guess the "issues" will be wrong

I don't know anything on the different spec etc. Anything I should look out for?

See does the seller provide a fire extinguisher?

I'd expect, personally with a car like that, that you'd want to have €1k in reserve for it at any given time for "come what may" type events, if you want to maintain it correctly. I'm not saying they are a bad car or anything but you won't run one properly on a shoestring.

Obviously they are now known for going on fire, I don't think these gave timing chain trouble like the earlier 20d's, other than that i'd just check it out like any other used car and make sure to do a history check for clocking/ write off etc.

Is it an SE or M-Sport? Whats the mileage? Does it have a service history? Post a link to the car ad if you want.

Try and go for one with Pro Navigation, its much nicer and IMO changes the interior of the car hugely. Will make it easier to sell in future too.

Very basic spec on that car. Doesn't even have widescreen sat nav.

5 series did have issues. Mostly now corrected with recalls.
All bmws are expensive to repair especially with main dealer. The good news for pre 2018 5 series is that spurious parts and second parts are widely available and the 5 series was so popular that most decent independent garages can fix all but the most intricate of problems and for those there are plenty of bmw independent specialists.

M3 and m sport are very very different things and not be confused.

I would suggest to buy from a main bmw dealer as bmw gives 2 years warranty on their used cars. Try to buy from a dealer outside of dublin as the prices are more keen outside dublin.

Main dealer with 3 year warranty included, didn't think you could go wrong with that

What's your max budget? Spec wise I would go with an M sport 520d with the M sport plus pack for a start. This gives you nicer 19" alloys, upgraded sound system, rear tinted windows and a little boot spoiler.

Then i would make sure it has the widescreen sat nav which comes with the media professional package.

Something like this which comes with a comprehensive 2 year warranty.

That's much lower spec than the first one you linked (which was an M-Sport).

Can your friend provide specific examples of things which go wrong? This is a 2016 model, about 5 years after the N47 timing chain issues stopped being a problem.

Has that car got the m sport plus package? In the 3 series the 19" wheels are distinctive on the plus and the calipers are blue. Maybe the 5 series is different.

Yes it does. Only the G30 5 series has the blue calipers on the M sport plus package. That wasn't ever available on the F10.

No specific budget at yet. I was looking at a RAV4 as well to move towards hybrid. It was close on 40k....

On timing chains - there was a new engine that came out in 2014. Not sure whether that fixes the issue.

Cream leather????? - unless you've got kids etc - the cream really lightens up the interior.

Black is nowhere near as nice in my opinion

Sure he can buy the 5 Series now and drive it for the next few years until Tesla hopefully manage to deliver a rhd Model 3 to customers who ordered them 2 or 3 years ago.

100% would prefer the cream but young kids and it would be ruined...

Also will probably have a multimac installed into it and very hard to get in cream so better to have in black.....

Thanks, ok so I have moved a little further on and now have swapped to a x3. Yes I know a little smaller to 5 series interior but I want the height and the x5 is a beast.

Just wondering, I am looking but clueless on BMW's in terms of what the spec lines are. What should I be on the look out for? like what is top spec etc?
