    i actually find acast best

I've done the week free trial of Castbox as I like the UI design and I'll see if it works out before subscribing. If not it'll be acast as it was the best alternative I found before.

@OldMrBrennan83 Maybe because it is Android Devices forum and not apps?

Some threads are merged on request when pointed out to the MODS.

Why do they close them or merge them here though, now that the title doesn't fit the content?

Now, I don't think we actually need a thread probably, but the militancy about it is strange. Especially as the Android forum could have ten different threads asking the same thing about the same phone and there's never anything closed or merged.

The innovators of Boards.ie have long since been paid and left.... The general autocratic Moderation style at play for years now seems to be intent on chasing the userbase out the door after them.

Sure what's an Android Device without Apps only an incidental chargeable paperweight.....

Yeah, that deserves one of these:

"Why can't we try something new?" - "Nah the Mods will just close it"....... SHRUGS.

    Thats just depressing.

Don't forget that introspection is always an option....

Are you at all aware of the reputation the Mods have created for themselves and by extension the Site over the years?

    - In fairness you may have had to put yourself in a postion to observe this criticism from outside the fold.

@Mango Joe Nobody is forcing you to read/visit/posts on this site?

It has it's faults and limitations, shareholders guidelines etc.

Allot of difference from it's heritage.

But we are well OFF-TOPIC for this thread, maybe post your complaints in feedback threads?

@Mango Joe - I explained why maintaining a list thread doesn't work here. It's not a case of "SHRUGS" - it's just too hard to maintain in vbulletin. Only mods can edit posts after 48 hours.

Anyway, off topic. This thread has worked well for 10 years and you're the only dissenter. Sorry.

31 temporarily free and 45 on-sale apps and games to start the weekend, including Icewind Dale

I was considering doing a list of my most used apps, but who would care and it would get lost in the thread. (SE, SeriesGuide, ADM, 'xxxxx'TV, TiBu, Reddit, Discord, Telegram, Flipboard and the list goes on and on .....) :)

If somebody wanted to do that, it wouldn't be hard to make an editable spreadsheet in google docs and post it as a new thread. That way they could also allow users to rate their favourite of each type of app too.

10 new and notable Android apps and live wallpapers from the last week including Playground: Japanese Phrases, Bolo: Learn to read with Google, and One Hand Operation + (3/2/2019 - 3/9/2019)

Another app, just came across today on youtube, not as good as filepursuit (linked before).

    [Play] FileChef-OpenDirectory Finder
"FileChef provides links to Direct Download from the Internet. It supports formats for videos, audios, documents and softwares. It harnesses the power of Advanced Search (google) to find Open Directories on Internet."

Edit:- Also a website: - http://filechef.com/ test it before downloading the app.

In all fairness, that 48 hours limitation is just a setting within the admincp and can be changed to have whatever limit they like (or none at all)... however, changing this could open all kinda problems down the road for them.

Would agree that having a useable 'top ten' would be hard to work as boards would need a plugin to make it user-friendly and not having every user copy and paste every single post.

Well, it would seem the original listing for Roller Coaster Tycoon Classic was removed from the Play Store after Atari accidentally listed it for free in a manner that did not allow its price to return, which is why it was delisted. The title has finally made a return, but it's an entirely new listing, which means those who paid for the old version are stuck with a delisted app that will no longer receive updates. This sucks for those who already purchased the game, though it's nice to see the title make a return for those that have yet to play it.

WTF Atari??? I bought this ages ago and was looking forward to trying it on my new phone. Now they want me to buy it again because they F'ed up?

Edit: Apparently you can get the old one here if you're in the same boat as me. Won't be receiving updates but it's better than nothing

I had only recently moved to Pocket Casts and thought the big hullabaloo around the previous redesign was all a little OTT as I really liked the app. Not sure I can say the same about the latest update and I've only been using the app for a few weeks prior to this. There are a few UX issues which I don't think will lessen with time but others will take a bit of getting used to.

I also have forced myself to step away from Google Inbox as I'm guessing it's only a matter or weeks before it's shut down. Rather than wake up one day and be in a position where I have to use GMail I am in the process of slowly migrating across and somewhat merging processes together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,665 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I'm still using pocketcasts. They've made the app more complicated, but it's still usable.

I switched from Inbox to Gmail around Christmas for the same reason as you - I didn't want to have to suddenly switch over at the end of March.

All good so far. I don't really miss it. :)

For those who moved back from Inbox to Gmail, how are you managing your reminders? Calendar? Keep? Assistant? And do you use them same method when sitting at a desktop/laptop?

I think the only two gaps I'm struggling to fill are easy reminder management and capturing a URL and converting it into either a pinned item in my inbox or a reminder.

I also really liked the snooze until 'later' option that was available within inbox.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 26,658 ✭✭✭✭OldMrBrennan83

I used assistant even when I used Inbox. They go into your calendar anyway.

Is there any web interface to add reminders/interact with assistant? I couldn't find any.

I use TickTick for reminders. It's €3 subscription a month for full features but I think it's worth it (yes of course I'd prefer if it was a once off payment). :)

Try the free version for a while...

Looks like a really nicely executed app. I might see if I can get away with the free tier. It would be a shame to have to pay e40 a year just to get a few features that I can no longer get within the Google ecosystem. I'm guessing there's a whole lot of additional features in that app that I'd have no need for but that's what I'd be paying for.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 26,658 ✭✭✭✭OldMrBrennan83

Try the Google Tasks app first and see if it will do what you need. It's minimal but might suffice, opens in a sidebar in Gmail, and syncs to the calendar on your phone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

I've started to use tasks as a proper to do list which I had been using a mixture of reminders and pinned URLs in Inbox for.

I think this works well in replicating how I dealt with long term tasks in the past.

I don't think it works for the more short term reminders that can now be done with Assistant and Keep. Assistant works well I just don't want to have to use my phone to set a reminder when it's been prompted by something I'm doing on a desktop.

It's odd how the things I'm looking for a quite minor but they've become a big part of my daily work flow.
