That Limerick reg Merc I posted earlier says it's a diesel at the rear but thinking about on the way home I don't believe they ever made a 450SE diesel for RHD/European market.

Going by the plate I'd say the mayor of Limerick was the first owner. It would have been a fairly expensive motor, even back then.

It most likely had a diesel conversion in the 80s or 90s, when such practices were all the rage. Dublin once upon a time, and until only about 12/15 years ago had loads of W126 taxis running Nissan diesel engines

She is a Limerick County reg. from 1975.
The counties didn't have a Mayor then just Chairman of the council and they didn't get an official car.

You are right it must have been very expensive.

Maybe someone converted it to diesel and stuck the badge on.

I went to the archives today but I didn't find the price for 1975 in Ireland but I did manage to find the UK prices.

If it is a 280se with the six cylinder 2746cc engine it cost 7,775 pounds sterling.
If it is a 450 se with the V8 4520cc engine the price was 9,692 pounds sterling.

Cars were more expensive in Ireland so it is safe to say that you could have bought quite a nice house in County Limerick for the price of that car.

Yeah, I had 3 of them, and apart from the head of the fuel filter/primer giving up on one, snd a starter motor on an other, they were 100% reliable mechanically.

    Great photo!

Talbot Solara, Bluebird estate, Bluebird saloon and Datsun Cherry closest to the camera.

Tasty e21 3 series in front of the Bluebird estate too
