What's the best approach to get into the DevOps world? My current role is a desktop support role and it's going nowhere.

I believe a junior DevOps role is hard to come by and they all want someone with experience.

    How is your programming?

DevOps is supposed to be more of a mindset than an actual role.

Nevertheless companies still hire "DevOps engineers", which could be anything. Sometimes it's an operations engineer. Sometimes it's a build engineer. Sometimes it's a "we don't really know what you do, but you do a little bit of everything" engineer.

You will need some programming skills. At the very least you will need to understand the main steps in how an application gets from being an idea in a developer's head, to a configured server with their application running on it. You will also need to know the fundamentals of TDD, CI/CD, and configuration management.

Best thing to do is to job search and look at the specs for "Junior DevOps" roles. Pick out the main keywords and then go find tutorials on them. Don't be afraid to spend €50 or €100 spinning up servers and applications in AWS so that you can practice and learn properly.

Most important skill you need is very good scripting and programming. How are you at powershell, python, bash, batch, java, etc..... If you are any good at these then you could have a Devops future.
