When our boy started Creche, he came down a lot with temperatures and viral stuff. Some of the temperatures were down to him teething and there were a few ear aches but all the rest was him being exposed to other kids and their germs reall. No hospital admissions though and Neurofen or a bout of antibiotics sorted it.

If he's blistering in his mouth then he will refuse foods and drinks, that's what happened in our house. Throw the proper food out the window and tempt him with anything - smoothies, milkshakes, ice-cream jelly - anything. You can revert back to brocolli negotiations when he's on the mend. We got steriods then too but the GP also prescribed Calgel which has lidocaine in it that numbed the mouth before taking the steroid. Brilliant stuff.

Just a thought though - when our son had a series of viral things going on, the antibiotics also affected his immune system so then he was more susceptible to the next one that did the rounds. I got him a probiotic. It's a powder sachet you add to a bottle or yoghurt daily. It seemed to help a lot.

But I do agree with others that you should get a referral to a paediatric consultant. Even if it's to rule out the more serious stuff.
