Task Manager always "empty"

I have a problem with the Task Manager, it always seems empty, as if nothing's running (i use XP pro). The only option it gives me is to disconnect the main user - i only use one account.
When i try to get rid of the TM, the whole computer freezes and i have to restart...
Any ideas how to fix it without resorting to violence?

Does the same thing happen when you hit Ctrl+shift+esc or can you see a list of processes?

    TacT,

didnt have a chance to reply to you earlier.
No, nothing happens - when i press ctrl-shift-esc, the task manager pops up, but there are NO processes, nothing!

And then i cant close the task manager...
how come no processes are displayed?
    Any ideas?

format the hard drive...wipe it clean and do a fresh OS install.

    last resort really.

I had something similar with XP home a few months ago.
I had put in a CD-R drive and everything went haywire from there.

2 fdisks later and 98se and tis plain sailing :)

what about applications and programmes, do i need to back up everything?
never done this before, seems like a major effort...
Any other way of "retrieving" the task manager without reinstalling the OS?
(i'm nearly sure it's something simple that i just keep overlooking...)
