Are brother-in-laws equal to blood brothers (sounds mad writing this) in wills? i.e. does the €32K bequest limit before revenue make a grab apply to both? if not what is the limit for the in-laws €16K?

Your brother-in-law is in group C (current threshhold: €16,750) as far as gifts or inheritances from you are concerned.

Unless your sibling (to whom he was married) has already died at the date of the gift/inheritance. In that case he steps into the shoes of his deceased spouse, so to speak, and comes within group B (current threshhold: €33,500).

Thanks for the reply, very helpful :) Are your limits a little too generous there? This article has the limits a little lower than you, has there been a change since it was published?

You're quite right; my figures are wrong. Current threshholds are as set out in your link.
