There was a mirror image of that car in Dundalk yesterday, similar reg and all, wasn't you was it? Have to say it really stood out as being not your regular Audi, looked great. Much nicer than the G30.

I'm still in two minds as to whether I like the two screen layout in that A6. Looks good and all in pictures, but I am old fashioned and I like my twisty knobs and buttons!

It's a bit much liked it when I first saw it, After touchscreen going wrong on me the heathers/ac, radio volume/tuning should all be physical twistys.
Not sure I like the step on the dashbaord either, suppose it's a design feature but there was nothng wrong with curves.

Looks like the same car Bob Flavin reviewed before Christmas.
There’s a fair few extras on that car. The wheels are 20”?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,566 ✭✭✭JoeA3

    Yeah, those are 20's.

I poked around in one of these a few weeks ago in the local Audi showroom. You can't help but admire them, particularly the interiors, but my god they are all so samey. There's something very clinical about them. I had to check the badges on the back to make sure I was looking at an A6/7/8. The interior though is a real gadgets-geek heaven. It looks fab, but I'm not sure how practical the complete lack of physical buttons is.

I really dislike this current fad for the squared/rectangular exhaust pipes too... especially on some cars where you can see the actual "round" tailpipe inside it or worse - that it's completely fake!

Yea my one concern with the digital instruments is that I know with my phone, a 10 year old equivalent would seem archaic, will the same happen with these. Buttons might get grubby/scratched but they still work perfectly fine as buttons.

That's a good point actually. Nothing dates a car interior more than old tech imo. Look at the dash of any ~8-10 year old car car with factory fitted sat-nav. It'll look prehistoric. The equivalent car with a standard enough radio will often look "fresher".

Hate the fake exhausts that Audi have started doing on this and other new models.
Interior wise I don’t like that you can’t get a light colour seat with s line package and have to pay extra for full leather. Also the seats are manual adjustment which at this price is mean.
Touch screen for climate is fine as you rarely touch this once temperature is set but I find I never use the touch screen in the 5 series unless at a stand still as the i drive wheel or steering wheel is better and safer. The move to all controls on a touch screen is not good from a safety point of view.

Agree with Joe that they are all a bit the same with Audi now.
However they will sell these no problem.
Incidentally when I went poking around the new Audi dealer here in limerick I noticed that all the new cars were priced on the windshield with the pcp price.
    i.e. monthly figures
Seems like this is how Audi sell vast majority of their new cars according to the sales guy I asked.

Just went on Audi website. Those alloys are 2157euro!

That's not bad for a set of OEM 20" that look as good as those.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

    Agreed, not bad at all.

I always wonder if you're better off speccing a car with a smaller wheel, getting the car delivered and then going back in to the same dealer a few weeks later and ordering a nicer set.
Would you be likely to get a better deal, plus have a full set of four to offload on eBay? Tyres could be the deciding factor.

What size are the standard wheels on the Audi? As voodoo says, you're losing a brand new set of, I'm guessing 19s and they are worth a few quid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,834 ✭✭✭carsfan2

    I must be a cheapskate!
I wouldn’t pay over 2k to go up an inch in wheel size and probably make the ride worse at the same time.

It would cost you an absolute fortune. OEM replacement wheels from main dealers cost big bucks. You’d be looking at easily around 1k per rim and that’s before you put rubber on them.

I don’t think those 20’s look anything special personally.

I priced my 20"s with BMW yonks ago and they were about €650 a corner. But I think you're right, you'd be worse off if you specced the dealer rubber elsewhere, it's one of the good things about getting a nice wheel with a dealer; you get a top end tyre with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,106 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Chap down Limerick direction imports wheels from the UK, think I paid €700 for 19 genuine staggered msports with Goodyears worth €250 a corner with no wear and the alloys were spotless.

Wheels are always far cheaper buying them on an ordered spec car.

On the subject of the glass interior, you could argue that although the iPhone had been around over a decade now, the phone is still a piece of glass that has varied in size and display but the principle is the same so it’s hard to know how ‘futuristic’ stuff in cars will pan out.

Boeing have glass displays for many years now, I can’t say that the glass part of the flight decks have aged, the physical controls around them have.

Maybe glass will be the norm and brands like Audi are just ahead of the curve. Who knows!

Agreed that electric seats should be standard at the price point.

The new Touareg has a similar design in the dash on the front passenger side, it definitely takes up space, I think I like it though.

The interior is dark but there is a lot of contrast from the brushed aluminium. S-Line has always been that way though, maybe cream doesn’t give off the same ‘sporty’ vibe in Audi’s world.

The B pillars are fairly chunky, there’s a fairly big blind spot over the drivers shoulder because of it.

Those of ye using touch screen controls, how do ye find them when on the move. Can't help but thinks a button or dial is handier, Don't even look down to change radio, air con, what ever, on older cars. Or do the steering wheel based controls cover all that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,106 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Dangerous, distracting. Your eyes are taken off the road, you can use buttons or nobs without even looking.

re the black Interiors and S line, I would be of the opinion that cream leather doesn't cut it when you think sporty but the fresher white and off white colours offered now by many manufacturers are the business.

    I was speccing up a new S line A4 until I found I couldn't have a light interior.

TBH I find the S line interiors very dark and dreary so it's going to be an SE for me now. Not a huge fan of the S line sports seats either so won't miss those with the SE.

I've seen a few UK spec S Line A5s and A6s with partial ivory coloured interiors but it's definitely a rarity in them. Anything lighter seems to be reserved for the S/RS models.

Also manually adjustable seats in that class of car in 2019 is comical to be honest.

Sorento is touchscreen but there's a dial for volume and all temp control done by buttons. Between the steering wheel controls and the climate buttons I only use the touchscreen for nav....& for setting presets in the radio....the temp adjust is a dial too....I think touchscreen is a disaster in a car TBH.

I went on the configurator and saw you can get a nice grey interior if you upgrade to full leather at 1300 odd.
Still should be no cost option.
I’m guessing that car you have Mark is about 65k on the road.
How do you find it to take off at junctions and kick down? All the reviews I’ve read and seen say the gearbox is very slow to respond. Put your foot down and initially nothing then power arrives. That would be a serious flaw. Bob flavin even said the drive let’s it down a bit and it’s rare for him to criticize.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,529 ✭✭✭MarkN

Take off from a stop, no issues but there is a bit of a delay in the kick down alright. I only really noticed it last night on the M1 and the video is already shot so I’ll have to add in post.

Don’t really think there is a bad car between A6, 5 series or e class. They all drive well and are comfortable as well as painless to own.
Really boils down to personal preference and what deal is achievable in each case.

Can't wait to see how CIP4 feels about that :pac:

He’s the lad with an A4?

When buying a brand new car I always thought you were better off speccing a better wheel there and then as opposed to going back to them later on.

For my 403M alloys, you'd be looking at over €1,000 each IIRC.

New A6 for those of you interested :)

    Yep :D

I think the next big jump in safety in cars will be voice commands for everything. It will mean you won't have to take your eyes off the road if you want to change heat settings, skip tracks on stereos etc.
