But do you think he sets up his team to win and succeed, was pretty much the original question.

We can harp on about luke shaw who the previous manager, and previous england manager had an issue with. Or Martial getting upset losing his number or getting upset Sanchez came.

I didnt like seeing Valencia playing yet it was a necessity. Also would dropping one player result in spuring them on like it should or would getting them to play themselves back into form. These are little intricate things of manager tgat change from player to player.

Jose i believe sets up his team to win, the players who he believes will be the best or have proven to be undroppable will play.

Do you believe he wants man u to win?

    I think that’s exactly it.

Against Valencia if you watched the game it looked quite poor and that the better team won. When you strip down the games events, United had more shots on target (Valencia had 2 v United’s 5) , Pogba missed a sitter, Mata prob had the next most dangerous chance in the game and one of Valencia’s goals was an awful OG. On another day we don’t Score a stupid OG and Pogba scores what he should I score 99 times out of 100.

It’s comparable with how united fans weren’t happy with our 2nd spot last season but it was as good as any of us could of hoped from a statistical point of view. Jose’s United tenure has been about being effective ,not entertaining, it hasn’t excited us so feels worse then it is.

Lads, did you see the Rory Smith article in the NY Times. Check out this:

“But just as damning are the myriad small things: the scouting offices left unoccupied at the club’s training facility, because the department has not been staffed adequately since before Ferguson’s departure; the fact that a number of players have sought medical treatment with outside specialists, and complained to Woodward that the care on offer at the club is not what they receive with their national teams or were afforded at their former employers; the decline of the reputation of United’s academy, now regularly rejected by prospective recruits in favor of Manchester City’s”

    Embarrassing stuff.

That house/furniture analogy from Mourinho is just about what I'd expect at this stage. And we wonder why the players look disinterested and bereft of confidence. I can't wait to see the back of him now, each week, each game, each press conference, they just make it all worse.

That's Jose, but we'll still have problems after he goes. Take a look at the below list of players whose contracts are up next Summer and therefore can leave for free...

    - Herrera
    - Mata
    - Valencia
    - Jones
    - Smalling
    - Darmian
    - Martial
    - Young
    - Andreas Pereira
    - James Wilson

Now, whether we think any of those players should ideally play for Manchester United, that's not the point in this business context. Most of the above players (bar Wilson) would sell for at least a few million each, if they weren't entering the Bosman phase of their contracts. In less than a month, every one of those players will be free to talk to other clubs, sign pre-contract agreements and plan their Summer exits.

How the fúck was that allowed to happen? Juan Mata who was a then record signing for us, Anthony Martial for £57m, Ander Herrera for around £30m, how on earth were they let get to the point where they can walk away for free next Summer? Btw, Martial is the only one of those three whose contract we have an option to extend for another year.

This past Summer was a complete failure, and at this point I'm not even talking about the players the club failed to bring in. It's the deadwood...about 5-7 of the names above, who should have been moved on this past Summer and were not. Last Summer was the time to get as much money for them as possible. Now, we'll be held over a barrel while they negotiate their new contracts (like with Fellaini last season) or they'll fúck off for free next Summer.

This isn't just a fan talking as it's clear from Jose's words and credible reports that players were due to leave OT this past Summer. For example, according to the likes of Matteo Darmian's agent and Jose, Darmian was all but signed for Juve at one stage in August. The fact that he is still in his United limbo is an indictment of our inability to get transfer business adequately done.

Some problems will be be relieved with Jose's departure, hopefully, but not enough of them to put us on the road back to consistent success. Ed Woodward has shown that he is good at bringing money in through sponsorship, but he leaves a lot to be desired on the football/transfer end of things. Throwing £100m at Juve for Pogba, £35m at Chelsea for the then luxury-signing Juan Mata (who Chelsea wanted rid of anyway), and winning the 'Who can offer Alexis Sanchez the most money?' game isn't all that impressive anymore in light of too many other failings.

Just to point out United have too many players and too many overpaid ones. Continuing to pay players a lot of money (so they don't leave) who you can't sell due to the high wage they have is not a good option either.

Take Mata, nobody would pay a chunky fee and pay him chunky wages as a 31 year old. So to keep him you have to be sure he is the right player to keep. At this stage his value is lower to United than to someone like Juve as he is as the club during a lot of rough times. At Juve (for example) he would get a fresh start and might give him a new life for a couple of seasons.

United need to get players out to get new ones in also.

If I asked everyone’s opinion on West Ham this season you’d probably remember them being terrible at the start of the season and struggling to pick up any points. You’d probably put them as a team who could be in a relegation battle.

They’ll be 2 points behind us tonight.

It doesn’t prove anything but the fact we are now within touching distance of 4 teams below us is depressing sobering.

Chris Smalling is absolutely fine as a David May, Wes Brown, Johnny Evans type player who is a more than capable centre half who plays regularly when one of your starting players is injured or needs a rest.

The fact he is our main centre half is the sad thing.

A new contract for smalling. Ffs. We need him gonr, not getting a fcking testimonial.

Keeping bang average to mediocre players like him around, rewarding their pathetic performances with more cash than they'll be offered anywhere else is why we're in 6th.

Reward failure and that's what you are going to perpetuate.

That new contract has Woodward written all over it.

giving him a renewed contract also means i think that there will be no defenders bought in january, which will once again frustrate jose.

Makes perfect sense giving him a new contract he is in his prime, perfect age, loads of experience and consistent.

If Jones gets one this club is truly lost.

What are they at giving out new long term contracts, we'll more than likely have a new manager next season at least let him decide if he wants Smalling or not

Sums up the mediocrity of United at the minute. Smalling wouldn't make the defence of any of the top 6 bar maybe Arsenal. And I expect Emery to strengthen there with another window or two under his belt.

One of the good things Pep did when he took over at City was quickly offload the players that were not good enough. The likes of Nasri, Navas, Fernando, Clichy, Sagna, Hart, Yaya Toure. All moved on very speedily.

United on the other hand leave players that everyone has known for years aren't good enough to stagnate at the club. Players like Smalling, Jones, Valencia, Darmian, Young and Fellaini should have been moved on years ago. And yes, some of them have made notable contributions in recent seasons but you would expect no less from Manchester United players.

It was depressing reading some of the combined United/Liverpool line-ups this week ahead of the game because most of them, quite rightly, are dominated by Liverpool players, and personally the only United player I'd have in there would be De Gea. You could make a case for Martial on form, but then if we're going on form Alisson probably makes it ahead of De Gea.

Sad state of affairs that United are miles behind rivals when it comes to player quality. I never expected things to get this bad. This club can't seem to identify quality correctly, and practically all of the recent signings have been flops.

Can only hope that Smalling is the last of these sub-par players to be rewarded with a new contract and that better players are secured. Ndombele should be top of the list. Let's get some players that the rest of the league, and Europe, would envy.

Sure if we let Smalling go we'd have to be looking for a replacement. Ed wouldn't fancy that
