Nvidia 750ti vs 970?

hi all,

I currently have 2 desktop computers, both with a 750ti. One with an AMD FX6300 and the other with a Core I3 4th generattion. my monitor is an AOC 1440p.

Funny enough the 750ti can handle most of the games I throw at it even at 2560x1440 res.

but I saw a 970 for around 140 euro on Adverts. Would people think this is a worthwhile upgrade? or should I stretch for an AMD 580?

The 580 is better, newer and is about 200 delivered brand new, and comes with free games at the moment.

970 is streets ahead of a 750ti though, but either cpu is going to be a major bottleneck to either it or a 580.

You can upgrade the 4th Gen i3 to an i7 for pretty cheap second hand....nothing worthwhile you can do with the fx-6300, it's a dead end socket.

ok I have half a plan to retire one of the desktops to a serve as a vintage windows 95 and XP games computer. Maybe it's time to build a new gaming desktop after 4-5 years

i double checked: the Core I3 is in a HP Proliant ML10 v2 server

I bought it with a Pentium G3240 and upgraded to Core I3 4150
It is possible to upgrade to Intel Xeon E3-1220v3 for 90 euro (Ebay) and sell the i3 for 60 euro

So for around 170 euro I would get a 970 + Xeon E3-1220v3. No idea what Core processor this compares to btw.

Any opinions out there if that is value for money?

Xeon E3-1220v3 is 4core/4thread so basically a lower-clocked i5.

You're better off getting an i5-4590 (€55 from CEX) or i7-4790 (€120).
Xeon 1231 v3 is equivalent to the i7 also.

What I am not sure about is if the server will support any Haswell chip.

3 CPUs are supported:

Specs Proliant ML10 V2

Chipset is intel C222
C222

Does this mean it can only take those specific 3 CPUs? or any 1150 chip?

If it can take any 1150 chip I could do this really on the cheap!

I'd agree, the i7-4790S is the best option here. The proprietary cooler is only good for 80W TDP, so need to keep under that, as from what I read, it's not replaceable due to the mounting system.

I just realise I have to change the PSU too. It only has 1 6-pin connector.

Enough for the the 750ti but not for the 970. Not a biggie but it adds 40-60 euro to the bill

Aye my thoughts exactly, sell the box, mobo, ECC RAM, the whole lot, and start again.

A single six pin is fine and will power an RX570 or most 580's (or 470/480) most 1060's, etc.

If you get an i7-4790 for €120 and then spend the same again on a 2nd hand RX570 or a little more for a 580, you're all set.
