watching extended highlights on Virgin now, it's nowhere near as tense.

did I hear Spurs beat Barce 0-2 in the Nou Camp? I'm sure Inter are happy. Still cracking result for them if that's what happened.

Matip should be our 3rd choice CB.
Lovren can be ok when his last ditch defending comes off but he is a liability.

    We played very well tonight.

Hopefully Mane has his shooting boots sunday.

VVD out for next round is a worry. Robertson got booked for time wasting. Does he miss a match also ? Salah booked for nearly killing the keeper when he touched him, really ridiculous. Who else is booked we need to worry about ?

Worry about that stuff in the new year!.....:p

Finished 1-1 in Spain sure Inter could only draw 1-1 with PSV so only can blame themselves

They all look competent next to VVD tbh, all have come on so much with him here.....

When's the yellow card amnesty? They need to look at that rule. It's too easy pick up a ban. Although I've only become interested with VVD and Salah at risk.

Thought we were lucky to qualify with 9 points but Spurs qualify with 8! Blessed....

He left the Napoli player with the free chance on goal though. If the other player can read a ball and be there for it, there's no reason he cant. He stood there with his hands up instead.

He did but that player had wandered offside, Lovren stayed closer to the defensive line rightly, only for it coming off Fabinho playing him on. Fabinho knocks it away or a Napoli players hits it and he did the right thing.

It's always hard for a centre back to.come into a game that late. I don't see much between lovren and matip, dog **** would look good next to van dijk though. By far the best centre back in the world no one comes close

Selling Coutinho for 142m & getting Alisson, Van Dijk,Robertson for about 148m is the best piece of business we have done.

3 of the best players in Europe in their position.

The only real squad positions we are short in is the full back positions.

We need another right back and left back as cover.

We also could do with one more forward.

    So three signings in January.

The downside is we'll be tired for the utd game, lots of players looked shattered.

Really good opportunity if we could get 1 or 2 in the Jan window, could make the difference in squeezing a few more points, could make all the difference, doubt we'll do any business though.

Unreal night, that was nervy as Hell. Today deserved though and really should have won by four or five.

First off, that save by Alisson at the end. You know Mignolet wouldn’t have saved that. Part of Alisson’s brilliance is he presence he has in that goal. There’s a huge difference bearing down on him or bearing down on Mignolet.

Once again, Robertson was unreal. Defensively solid and such a bloody good outlet going forward, he relieves so much pressure.

VVD was immense as per usual. Thought Firmino was poor tonight, he still has to find that form from previous seasons.

It’s such a relief to get through because honestly, if we’d have been knocked out tonight, i’d rather be out of Europe altogether which I know wasn’t a possibility. So it’s lovely that it will be Champions League football distracting us in February and not the Europa League.

Just a quick word on Napoli. I know it can be a bit weird going into a game in which you don’t HAVE to win. But they were one down for the majority of that match and never looked like going for it apart from the last couple of minutes when they kept Koulibali up there and launched it.

Anyway, great night and some good reading in other threads I suspect. :D

It's Tuesday, the game is Sunday. They'll be fine. The lads were run into the ground tonight with no changes being made until very late. Napoli also changed their game up and stretched us, which made the players look even more knackered

A nice warm down tomorrow and light tactical training days Thursday and Friday and Saturday and an early night they will be grand for a home game on Sunday afternoon.

It's on late on Sunday but Utd will rest key players tomorrow so should be better prepared. Nabby and Fabby maybe with a bit of Shikiri? Thought Bobby was tired but Salah and Mane were full of running at the end.

I'd prefer players didn't take the chance and hope a player is offside. Stay goal side, clear the chance . Napoli player took the chance and should have scored. " but it came off fabinho otherwise he was offside " is duck all consolation when the 2nd half of the season is spent playing Thursday night football.

4 full days between games, not ideal but you have Shaqiri, Fabinho, Lovren and Keita fresh enough.....I know United are through but they play tomorrow night and cant rest everyone....well they can but doubt they will.....

A season on the bench and throw a cheeky 50m offer at them in the summer :)

Not as comfortable as we'd hoped but still ground out what we needed to do. Roll on Saturday :D maybe we'll hit another gear !

When a player goes offside you don't follow him, you stay with your other defenders as well as you can. If he drops back other Napoli players can get closer to the goal behind VVD/Matip/Fabino in that situation. He'd be booted up the hole by his other defenders if he dropped deep with an offside player. When you play a defensive line you trust each other to keep the line and win the ball, you have to let offensive players go into an off side position.

He wasnt anywhere. He was floating around between both

Well, that was real, fcuking overjoyed! No point focusing on some of the worrying performances - the team came through and running out of superlatives to describe the performances of Ali and VVD. Thought Matip has really shown himself to be not just a safe option but he had a sharpness in picking out attacking passes whilst remaining cool under pressure.

Have to say though, the one player that I really enjoyed watching throughout the whole match was Robbo, on and off the ball. Don't know who got MOTM but Robbo was just a joy to watch. How he hooks up with the front 3, especially with Mo - how he gestured for a ball to run onto from Mo before his perfect cross to Mane that their goalie did well to save was brilliant. His positional awareness and how he seems to get the balance between defense and attack right more often than not and his fitness and commitment.... Anyway, great result, can't wait for Sunday...

Ball is coming in, Lovren can see his other defenders and has a hand on his attacker so he knows where he is. As the play develops his man gets further away from him, Lovren can see his defenders so knows his man is now offside and checks his run. Leaving him half yard to a yard behind his defenders as they attack the ball and knows his man is now offside. His defending was good in that situation.
